Nell Verlaque was born with the script on the kitchen table. Her father is actor and director Robert Verlaque, and she grew up in New York under the direct influence of theater and independent film sets. She trained at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, a school that demands a level of discipline most teenagers never experience.
Her first real chance in front of the cameras came in 2017. She appeared in an episode of the series Bull, and although it was a brief role, it helped her understand the pace of a major television production. But independent film would give her her first substantial role shortly afterward.
In 2020, she shot The Marijuana Conspiracy. The movie tells a true story about a Canadian experiment in the 1970s, and Verlaque played Bridget. It was an ensemble job where critics began noting her name for her ability to carry close-ups effortlessly.
And the plan worked.
Her real breakout came in 2021. Disney+ was casting a young ensemble for Big Shot, a series about a women's basketball team led by a volatile coach. Verlaque landed the role of Louise Gruzinsky and stayed with the show for both seasons it ran.
Filming this series required constant physical preparation. She had to look like an elite athlete while also handling her character's family conflicts. It was during this period that she proved she could carry a supporting storyline with the same strength as veteran leads.
But horror was waiting just around the corner.
In 2023, her career took a different turn under the direction of Eli Roth. The director chose her to lead the cast of Thanksgiving, a slasher that grew out of a fake trailer created almost two decades earlier. Verlaque played Jessica, the girl who must survive a massacre in a Massachusetts town during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Roth's film was an immediate commercial hit. On a budget of just $15 million, it grossed more than $46 million worldwide. Verlaque became the visible face of a new generation of actresses linked to the genre who aren't afraid to get covered in fake blood.
That shoot in Toronto was tough because of the freezing temperatures. But the actress preferred to perform many of the physically demanding stunt scenes herself instead of relying constantly on stunt doubles. Her commitment to the project convinced the producers to secure her return to the franchise.
In 2024, her casting in the HBO series The Gilded Age was confirmed. It's a complete change of gear from horror films (it involves corsets, Victorian etiquette and much more rigid dialogue). This ability to move from one century to another defines her career.
And she made it happen.
The sequel to Thanksgiving is scheduled for release in 2025.
