The Business of Sounding Like a Boy

Noriko Ohara never planned to be the voice of a timid boy for a quarter of a century. In 1979 she accepted the role of Nobita Nobi in Doraemon without knowing that this part would set the rhythm of her life until 2005. But her career had started long before that, forged in theater and black-and-white television.

She was born in Tokyo in 1935 into a family of lawyers. Her father wanted her to follow the family tradition, but she preferred dramatic arts. And the gamble paid off.

She was the voice behind Japan's most famous lazy boy.

In 1978 she worked under Hayao Miyazaki on Conan, the Boy in Future. That lead male role laid the groundwork for what the industry expected from her. She had an unusual physical ability to compress her vocal cords without losing her capacity to convey vulnerability.

Long before she voiced the cosmic cat, she was already a veteran. In 1974 she voiced Peter in Heidi, and that gave her a financial security that few voice actors had at the time. The payment system in 1970s anime was chaotic and often unfair.

The villain who overshadowed the hero

But not all of them were good boys or shepherds in the Alps. In 1977, Ohara took on the role of Doronjo in Yatterman. It was a change of register that was necessary to avoid being typecast in children's roles. That villainous, sexy, somewhat clumsy character allowed her to explore a much more aggressive comedic side.

She was paid a flat fee for each recording session that didn't reflect the character's cultural impact. Even so, she never publicly complained about the working conditions in her profession. She preferred to focus on the pure craft of voice acting.

Then came the explosion of space science fiction. In 1982 she played Claudia LaSalle in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. It was a serious adult role that demanded absolute restraint. In that project she showed she could handle technical and romantic dialogue with equal ease.

Japanese audiences associated her with Nobita's vulnerability, but directors knew her real strength was discipline.

2005's Handover and the Years of Silence

In 2005 the big change came. The original Doraemon cast decided to step down together to make way for new voices. It was a tough executive decision. Ohara stopped being Nobita after 26 years of nonstop weekly recordings.

She continued working on selected projects and in 2007 received a lifetime achievement award at the first Seiyū Awards. But her presence in studios became less frequent. She devoted herself to giving talks and preserving a legacy that already belonged to several generations of viewers around the world.

In 2023 she quietly took part in a few commemorative events. Her health began to visibly decline in the eyes of those closest to her. But there were never any official statements about her physical condition until the end.

Noriko Ohara died on July 12, 2024, at the age of 88. The agency 81 Produce confirmed that the death came after medical treatment that did not work.
