From Schwarzenegger's sword to the Arnolds' living room

Olivia d'Abo landed in Hollywood at fifteen with a papier-mâché crown. She was 1984. On the set of Conan the Destroyer, she had to deal with the physical presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger while playing Princess Jehnna. It was a trial by fire shot in Mexico, aiming to repeat the success of the first installment.

That same year, she starred in Bolero alongside Bo Derek. Critics tore the film apart, and it earned her the Razzie for Worst New Star. Rather than sink, she decided television was a friendlier place for a young British actress in Los Angeles.

And the gamble paid off.

Between 1988 and 1993, she played Karen Arnold in The Wonder Years. She was the rebellious, hippie older sister who constantly clashed with her father's conservative views. Her role on the show lasted for 95 episodes, and it gave her a level of financial security that few young actors manage to keep.

During that time, she balanced her role as Karen Arnold with film roles such as Point of No Return in 1993. She worked alongside Bridget Fonda in this American remake of Nikita. The industry tried to typecast her in supporting femme fatale roles, but she preferred to explore her musical side in private.

A refuge in voice acting and voice work

Mike d'Abo, her father, led the band Manfred Mann in the sixties. So music was never a passing whim for her. In 2008, she released the album Not Zero after spending almost a decade writing songs in her free time.

But auteur cinema interested her more.

From the 1990s onward, her voice became a more valuable asset than her on-camera image. She voiced Jane Porter in the Disney animated series Tarzan in 2001. She also lent her voice to the villain Star Sapphire in various DC Comics projects.

Voice work has been a constant in her career. In 2014, she took part in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, and years earlier she voiced Luminara Unduli in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This diversification helped her avoid the invisibility that many actresses face once they reach their forties.

The return to the Arizona desert in 2023

She never stopped working on independent, low-budget productions. In 2019, she shot Invincible, and a year later she appeared in the action thriller The 2nd alongside Ryan Phillippe. These are projects that often go straight to home video without passing through movie theaters.

In 2022, she joined the cast of The Legend of La Llorona. The film was shot under strict health protocols and explored the Mexican legend from a conventional horror perspective. It was a 2.5 million dollar production aimed at quick profits on streaming platforms.

Her most notable recent project came in 2023 with The Last Stop in Yuma County. It is a crime thriller with a modern Western feel, shot in desert locations in California. In this film, she shares the screen with Richard Brake in a story about bank robbers trapped at a gas station.

It wasn't all as epic as it seemed.

That same year, 2023 shot the suspense thriller Stay Safe under director Carlos V. Gutierrez. The plot centers on a pandemic and the isolation of its leads in a bunker. Filming was completed in under a month to keep post-production costs down.

In 2019, she divorced composer Patrick Leonard after seven years of marriage. The legal proceedings closed in Los Angeles courts without much attention from the California tabloid press.
