Pamela Anderson was born in Ladysmith in 1967 as the centennial baby of Canada. Her life changed dramatically in 1989 during a BC Lions football game. A camera randomly focused on her while she wore a beer brand T-shirt, and the entire stadium roared at her image on the giant screens.
That burst of testosterone in the stands was the start of her professional career. Soon after, she moved to Los Angeles to pose for the October 1989 cover of Hugh Hefner's magazine. It was the first of fourteen covers. No other woman has appeared on that cover as many times in the publication's history.
In 1992, she accepted the role of C.J. Parker in Baywatch. The series was sold to 140 countries, and she became the most-watched woman on the planet. The high-cut red swimsuit wasn't comfortable for swimming, but it drew one billion weekly viewers worldwide.
But the industry never took her seriously outside of the water.
The release of Barb Wire in 1996 was a financial reality check for the producers. The film cost 9 million dollars and barely grossed 3.8 million at the U.S. box office. Critics savaged it. Analysts blamed her public image and a plot that tried to imitate Casablanca in a futuristic B-movie setting.
That film began a years-long dry spell in her movie career that would last for decades.
In 1995, she married musician Tommy Lee after meeting him just four days earlier. The theft of a private tape from her own home destroyed her right to privacy before there was clear internet legislation. She never commercialized that video. In fact, she spent years trying to erase its legal trail while the world consumed it en masse in low-quality digital formats.
She decided to take control of her own financial narrative with the series V.I.P. between 1998 and 2002. There, she worked as an executive producer to prove she understood the image business better than her own agents. The series lasted four seasons on air thanks to international sales and a comedic tone that parodied her own public persona.
In 2022, she took the stage at the Ambassador Theatre in New York to play Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago. No one expected a 54-year-old woman with no prior Broadway experience to keep up with Bob Fosse's choreography. The reviews were positive, and the shows sold out for eight consecutive weeks.
That stage success opened the door to a deep reevaluation of her public image. In 2023, she published her memoir titled Love, Pamela and released a documentary in which she spoke candidly about her traumas and her failed marriages. The book hit number one on the New York Times Best Sellers list in its first week of release.
And then came the real dramatic opportunity.
In 2024, she filmed The Last Showgirl under the direction of Gia Coppola in Las Vegas. She plays a veteran dancer who watches her show close after thirty years of nonstop performances. The shoot lasted just 18 days and was carried out with a small crew to preserve the intimacy of the scenes.
The film premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2024, earning a professional reception she hadn't received since the nineties. Jamie Lee Curtis and Dave Bautista round out the cast of an independent production that cost less than an episode of her former television series.
The film is distributed internationally with a marketing budget of less than two million dollars.
