Paul Freeman swallowed a fly on camera and never stopped talking. It happened in 1980 during the filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark in the dunes of Tunisia. That organic accident forever defined his image as an imperturbable villain.
Steven Spielberg chose him after seeing him in a supporting role on British television. The director was looking for someone who could look down on Harrison Ford without resorting to brute force. René Belloq was not a soldier but a dark mirror of the protagonist.
Belloq was both his curse and his salvation.
Before reaching the African desert, Freeman was already a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His academic training allowed him to handle dense dialogue with a naturalness that unsettled Hollywood producers. In 1980 he appeared in Long Good Friday, a landmark title of British noir.
But the general public only wanted to see him as Indy's rival. So he spent much of the 1980s moving between blockbusters and prestige series. In 1988 he shot Sin pistas alongside Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. The project was an absolute box office flop, but it still allowed him to explore his comedic side.
He never sought absolute stardom because he preferred the security of the character actor. In the British cinema of the nineties, supporting actors were the ones who truly held up the industry.
In 1995 he accepted a challenge that many critics considered professional suicide. He squeezed into a purple rubber suit to play Ivan Ooze in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. It was a purely financial decision that ended up giving him total financial freedom to choose smaller projects.
No one recognized him under the makeup.
His return to cult cinema came in 2007. Edgar Wright cast him in Hot Fuzz because he needed a face that could inspire both trust and terror in equal measure. Reverend Philip Shooter became one of the key pieces of that satire about rural England. Filming lasted eleven weeks in the town of Wells.
And the gamble paid off.
Freeman has never stopped working in high-budget fiction. In 2017 he joined the cast of Absentia to play Warren Byrne across thirty episodes. His work pace did not slow down when he turned seventy years old.
In 2022 he took part in the television adaptation of The Man Who Fell to Earth, playing Sowerby. A year later, in 2023, he appeared in season six of The Crown, bringing Sir Robert Fellowes to life. His screen time has become shorter but much more expensive for production companies.
In 2024 he was part of the cast of the miniseries A Gentleman in Moscow. He has used the same system of annotations in the margins of his scripts since 1967.
