Paul Walter Hauser was born in Grand Rapids in 1986. His father was a Lutheran pastor, and his childhood was spent between church pews and 1990s comedies. He wasn't chasing the quick fame of California's pretty boys. But he had a natural instinct for comedic timing that he honed in high school.

In 2010, he landed his first small TV roles. They were brief appearances on shows such as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. No one saw him as a future Emmy Award star. But Hauser knew to wait for his moment while working on his own brand of physical comedy.

In 2017, audiences truly discovered him with I, Tonya. He played Shawn Eckhardt, the skater's delusional bodyguard. He made a pathetic character unsettling. He landed the role after just one audition, mixing stupidity with an unshakable self-confidence.

The shadow of Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood cast him in 2019 to star in Richard Jewell. It was his first major leading role in film. He played the security guard who discovered the bomb at the Atlanta Olympic Games. The press accused him of being the terrorist. Hauser carried the entire film on his shoulders.

Before filming, he studied real footage of the man he played. He didn't want to imitate him. He wanted to understand why Jewell kept respecting the police while they were investigating him. He earned a nomination from national critics and proved he could carry a big-budget drama.

But mass recognition came through a much darker path.

In 2022, he starred in the miniseries Black Bird for Apple TV+. He transformed into Larry Hall, a serial killer with a high-pitched voice and a vacant stare. The shoot was mentally exhausting. And the effort paid off. In 2023, he won the Golden Globe and the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor.

The Ring and the Future of Marvel

Hauser is not just a method actor glued to a script. In 2023, he made his professional debut in pro wrestling. He took part in a match for AEW and won an independent championship shortly after. For him, entertainment is a total physical discipline.

In 2024, he voiced Disgust in Inside Out 2. It was the highest-grossing movie of that period. His voice conveyed exactly what the character needed without any big theatrics. But his schedule for the coming years is even more ambitious.

In 2025, he will join the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Marvel has signed him for a role that is being kept under strict secrecy. He is also set to star in the reboot of The Naked Gun alongside Liam Neeson. His contract includes production clauses that allow him to get involved in the development of projects.

Filming of his next movie about Chris Farley will begin in late 2025.
