Paula Gallego entered the living room of Spain's most famous family in 2013. She was nine years old and had a contract to play María Alcántara in Cuéntame cómo pasó. That girl from Ferrol grew up in front of millions of viewers while learning the craft between cameras and period scripts.
The protection of the San Genaro living room is over.
In 2019, she chose to voluntarily end that chapter. The actress wanted to break away from the little-daughter image the public had assigned her for almost a decade. Her exit from the series was a strategic decision to avoid the typecasting that so often swallows child actors on television.
But the road outside her comfort zone was not easy. She took part in Vis a Vis: El Oasis in 2020, where she explored a much darker and more violent setting. That supporting role helped casting directors start seeing a grown woman capable of carrying complex dramatic tension.
In 2021, she took on her first major big-screen challenge with La pasajera. This horror and science fiction film placed her in a completely different register. She shared a van with aliens and physical special effects during a shoot that demanded constant physical stamina.
And the bet on genre cinema paid off.
Critics praised her ability to keep the tension high in a story that blended Spanish social realism with raw horror. The film had an international run at specialized festivals and allowed Gallego to move away for good from the family comedies of her early career.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Machos Alfa. In this Netflix production, she played Álex in a storyline that explored new masculinities and generational conflicts. It was a role that required complete naturalness to fit the fast pace of contemporary comedy.
Because Spanish auteur cinema also came knocking. In 2024, she premiered La mujer dormida, where she shared the spotlight with Almudena Amor and Javier Rey. The shoot for this psychological thriller took place in locations in the Canary Islands and Madrid under the direction of Ian de la Rosa.
That same year, she appeared in La virgen roja. In this feature film directed by Paula Ortiz, she immersed herself in the real story of Hildegart Rodríguez. The project had a high production budget to recreate the aesthetics of 1930s Spain.
The actress balanced these film projects with her role in the daily series 4 estrellas during 2023 and 2024. This steady work pace shows a level of technical stamina that is rare among profiles of her generation.
Filming La mujer dormida in 2024 required a technical effort built on practical effects, to avoid relying too heavily on digital post-production in the most tense scenes.
