Peter Coyote didn't seek out Hollywood. Hollywood found him living in a San Francisco commune in the late seventies. At the time he went by the name Robert Peter Cohon and led the Diggers, a radical theater group that handed out free food and challenged private property.
That real anarchy gave him a gaze the camera would capture years later. He lacked the submissive attitude of the aspiring stars who swarmed Los Angeles. He had already lived on the margins, and that gave him a natural authority in front of the lens.
In 1982, he played the scientist Keys in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It was his first major commercial role after a decade of experimental theater and activism on the streets of California. Steven Spielberg chose him because they needed someone who didn't look like a textbook villain.
And the gamble paid off.
That angular face and baritone voice opened doors to very different projects. In 1992, he worked under Roman Polanski in Bitter Moon. There he brought to life a dark, disabled character that broke with the image of integrity he projected in his earlier work.
But his career was never limited to standing in front of the camera.
He was never the typical poster heartthrob.
In 1990, his professional partnership with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns changed his career forever. Coyote gave his voice to the series The Civil War and became the official narrator of American history. His true influence lies in the credibility he brings every time he reads a script about his nation's past.
He has won two Emmy Awards for this technical work, yet he approaches it with an almost craftsman-like simplicity. He doesn't rehearse voiceovers for hours. He prefers the freshness of the first read to keep the tone feeling curious.
In 2011 he was ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest. This was no whim of a veteran actor: he had been practicing meditation since his youth in the hippie communes. His spiritual life and his film career began to walk hand in hand with complete sobriety.
He doesn't care about the glitter of red carpets.
In 2020, he appeared in the miniseries The Comey Rule, playing Robert Mueller. His performance relied on silence and a restraint that few actors of his generation are able to sustain. For that shoot, he didn't need heavy artifice or facial prosthetics.
His filmography exceeds 120 titles across film and television. In 2023 he finished recording the documentary The West, where he once again serves as the narrative thread. He commands the same fee for his voice as many leading actors for a lead role in a blockbuster.
And he still lives without television in his home in Northern California. The contract for his latest narration in 2024 was closed in less than forty-eight hours for a six-figure sum.
