In 2013, Phoebe Waller-Bridge took the stage at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a monologue about a woman obsessed with sex and validation. There was no set. Just a chair and a candor that made the front rows squirm.
That script was titled Fleabag. British critics quickly understood that its voice wasn't trying to please anyone but to dissect modern loneliness with almost violent black humor.
It was an absolute gamble.
Before that breakthrough, she worked in supporting roles on police dramas and in stage plays that barely covered the rent. But her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art gave her the technical tools to build characters who seem broken on the outside and on the inside.
In 2016, Channel 4 premiered Crashing. It was her first real foray as a full creator in television, and it followed six young people who lived illegally in an abandoned hospital to save money.
And the gamble paid off.
The series already showed her talent for writing rapid, overlapping dialogue. Waller-Bridge understands that pain is funnier when it's told at full speed and without asking the viewer's permission.
In 2016, she adapted Fleabag for television for the BBC. The series aggressively broke the fourth wall, because the lead character didn't just look at the camera to seek complicity, but also to hide her own guilt.
But her massive recognition didn't come from her face but from her pen. In 2018, she decided not to star in her next big project and stayed behind the cameras as head writer of Killing Eve.
The industry changed its mind overnight.
That story of a psychopathic assassin and an MI5 agent obsessed with each other turned the traditional spy thriller rules upside down. The mix of high fashion, creative murders and dry humor gave her full creative control over her future contracts.
In 2019, the second season of Fleabag swept the Emmy Awards. It won Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Comedy Series in a single night, while photos of her smoking with a cocktail in hand went viral.
That same year, she signed an exclusive deal with Amazon Studios worth 20 million dollars a year to develop original content under her own production label.
In 2021, her name appeared in the credits of No Time to Die. The James Bond team specifically brought her in to polish the script and add depth to the female characters in the latest installment of Daniel Craig.
She worked directly with director Cary Fukunaga to bring realism to the dialogue of agents Nomi and Paloma. So her contribution was not merely cosmetic but structural, within a franchise that had long been criticized for its rigidly masculine approach.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, playing Helena Shaw. She shared the screen with Harrison Ford in a production whose initial budget exceeded $290 million.
The contract was signed for three more years.
In 2024, development began on the Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, where she serves as writer and executive producer. The project is directly overseen by Crystal Dynamics to ensure the new version of Lara Croft stays true to the mechanics of the original video games.
The first season's production schedule calls for a shoot lasting 22 weeks across locations in the United Kingdom and continental Europe.
