A leg injury ended her dance aspirations when she was just eighteen years old.
Polly Walker traded ballet shoes for the stage in London, and that physical frustration eventually shaped a commanding stage presence that intimidates naturally. She wasn't chasing fame quickly. In fact, after graduating from the Drama Centre, she spent a season with the Royal Shakespeare Company playing supporting roles that barely covered the bills.
In 1992, she had the double breakthrough that defined her international career. She appeared in April Fools' Day, and almost immediately landed a Hollywood blockbuster, Patriot Games. In the latter, she played an IRA terrorist with a coldness that left critics stunned. But she never felt comfortable with being pigeonholed into a single film genre.
And the industry took notice.
Her look opened the door to a run of period dramas in which the corset seemed like an extension of her own skin. In 1995, she shot Restoration alongside Robert Downey Jr., and in 1996 she stepped into the role of Jane Fairfax in the adaptation of Emma. These roles demanded absolute restraint and a command of silence that Walker mastered better than most of her peers.
Her career can't be explained without her ability to convey contempt or ambition with a single raised eyebrow. But Hollywood didn't always know what to do with an actress who turned down innocent-girl roles in favor of characters with uncomfortable moral edges. In 1997, she starred in The Woodlanders, a film that went largely unnoticed by the general public but cemented her status in British independent cinema.
That was no miscalculation.
Television was her salvation.
Television gave her, in 2005, the role most audiences associate with her face. In Rome, she played Atia of the Julii, a character who devoured every scene with a fascinating amorality and an elegance that bordered on dangerous. HBO put a massive budget on the table, and Walker responded with a performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
That project changed her relationship with major American studios. But rather than settling in Los Angeles, she chose to split her work between both sides of the Atlantic. In 2009, she appeared in the series Caprica, a science fiction prequel in which she played a religious terrorist. Her resume soon filled with powerful women operating in the shadows of social structure.
In 2020, she joined the cast of Bridgerton to play Lady Portia Featherington. She is a character who survives on desperate financial schemes and a loud wardrobe that she defends with almost tragic dignity. The series' scripts allowed her to explore a comedic side that had remained hidden for decades behind her mask of aristocratic coolness.
For filming her scenes in 2024, the costume team designed fourteen custom corsets that Walker wears during twelve-hour days on set.
