Two worlds. One hero.

John Carter, a Civil War veteran, inexplicably finds himself on Mars, which in the story is also called Barsoom. There, he discovers he moves with a strength far greater than any human's, a result of the planet's lower gravity. Barsoom is trapped in a brutal war between two factions, Helium and Zodanga, and the newcomer is dragged into a conflict he doesn't understand. His goal is to try to mediate between the warring kingdoms, a difficult task in a world inhabited by warrior tribes and savage beings. Tars Tarkas and Princess Dejah Thoris are part of this devastated landscape. Directed by Andrew Stanton, the film stars Taylor Kitsch and opens with Carter already caught up in a war he knows nothing about.

Trivia about John Carter

Bob Clampett's animation tests were considered lost for years, until Danton Burroughs, grandson of Edgar Rice Burroughs, found some of them in the archives in the early 1970s.

If A Princess of Mars had been released, it could have preceded Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) as the first American animated feature film.

The film flopped at the North American box office, but it set an opening-day premiere record in Russia.

The film's total cost was $350 million, including an estimated production budget of $263 million.

Due to the box office results, Disney canceled plans for Gods of Mars and Warlord of Mars, the two remaining installments needed to complete the trilogy Stanton had planned to shoot.

To convince Disney to let him direct, Stanton pitched the project as "Indiana Jones on Mars," despite the studio's initial skepticism.

Taylor Kitsch was Stanton's almost immediate choice after he saw a scene from Friday Night Lights, whose pose matched Carter's on a cover of the director's book collection.

Changing the film's opening meant shooting 18 new scenes, for which Disney agreed to a new shoot.
