James Purefoy walked off the set of V for Vendetta six weeks into filming because he couldn't stand working with his face covered. That decision in 2005 says a lot about his career. He would rather risk being left out than lose the expressiveness he learned at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
He is a Somerset-born actor with a sharp, almost cutting British reserve.
He was born in 1964 and grew up at a boarding school, where he learned to pretend in order to survive. That is the foundation of his craft. Before he turned twenty, he was already working as a delivery driver and on farms to pay for drama school in London.
For a long time he was labeled the next James Bond. But the role of 007 slipped away from him twice, against Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. Instead of sinking, he accepted the role of Mark Antony in the HBO series Rome, which aired between 2005 and 2007.
There he proved that arrogance can be an art form when it is performed with the right look.
And the gamble paid off.
The American industry quickly typecast him as the seductive villain or the aristocrat with dark secrets. In 2013 he starred in The Following alongside Kevin Bacon. He played a serial killer obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe who led a cult from prison. The series ran for three seasons and gave him a global visibility that British cinema had rationed until then.
He isn't scared of commercial television or science fiction projects with bloated budgets. In 2018 he stepped into the role of Laurens Bancroft for Altered Carbon on Netflix. He played a three-hundred-year-old immortal millionaire who lived in a skyscraper above the clouds.
He took the role because it let him explore the absolute decay of power.
But his biggest critical success from that period came with Sex Education starting in 2019. He played Remi Milburn, an absent, narcissistic father who served as a counterpoint to the rigidity of the main plot. Purefoy knows that a strong supporting role is worth more than an empty lead in a forgettable action movie.
Television gave him what the movies denied him.
In 2023 he filmed the medical drama Malpractice, playing Dr. Leo Harris under the direction of Philip Barantini. A year later, in 2024, he joined the cast of The Veil, a espionage thriller for Hulu, where he shares the screen with Elisabeth Moss. Filming for the latter production took place across various locations in Turkey and France, with a crew of more than two hundred people.
The international distribution deal for the series was closed for close to €25 million.
