Managing the Myth and the Money

Priscilla Beaulieu arrived in Memphis in 1963 under strict conditions imposed by her parents and by Elvis Presley himself. She had to finish high school at a local Catholic school before considering any formal commitment. But life inside the walls of Graceland was far from a teenage fairy tale.

After her divorce in 1973, she found herself needing to build an identity of her own outside the singer's shadow. It was not an easy task. Most of the contracts she signed during that period were tied to her last name and to the image of the rock world's official widow that the public wanted to consume.

In 1982, she made a decision that saved her family's fortune from total bankruptcy. She opened Graceland to the public because the numbers didn't add up. The estate was losing nearly half a million dollars a year in upkeep and taxes, and the trust fund of her daughter Lisa Marie was running on fumes.

And the gamble paid off.

The mansion became a massive pilgrimage site that generated profits from its very first month open. Priscilla proved she had a far sharper business instinct than Elvis's former advisors. She understood before anyone else that nostalgia was an extremely profitable luxury product.

From the Living Room to the Movie Set

Her entry into acting was no last-minute whim. In 1983, Priscilla joined the cast of Dallas to play Jenna Wade. It was a smart move to gain financial and professional independence in an industry that viewed her with skepticism.

She stayed on the series for five seasons, but the general public inevitably associates her with absurd comedy. In 1988, she accepted the role of Jane Spencer in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! alongside Leslie Nielsen.

Many critics thought a figure so tied to the drama of Elvis would fail at slapstick comedy. They were wrong. The film was a box office hit and spawned two sequels in 1991 and 1994, in which she reprised her role with the same comedic skill.

That period was the most stable of her career in front of the cameras.

From then on, her screen appearances became more selective. She preferred to focus on production and on expanding Elvis Presley Enterprises. In 2008, she sold most of her stake in the company but kept control over the details that affected her ex-husband's public image.

Controlling the Final Narrative

Priscilla has always guarded her version of events with professional zeal. In 1985, she published her memoir, Elvis and Me. The book served as the basis for a television miniseries and set the official account of her relationship with the singer for the decades that followed.

In 2023, director Sofia Coppola brought that story back to the big screen with the film Priscilla. This time she served as executive producer to ensure the film's tone matched her personal memories. The production was shot in just thirty days on a tight budget of twenty million dollars.

But Priscilla's personal life has been marked by tragedy in recent years. In 2020, she lost her grandson Benjamin Keough, and in 2023 her only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, died from a bowel obstruction.

Her daughter's death triggered an immediate legal battle over control of the family estate.

In May 2023, Priscilla Presley reached a legal settlement with her granddaughter Riley Keough to resolve their differences over the family trust. She received a one-time payment of one million dollars plus another 400,000 dollars to cover her legal fees. The agreement also guaranteed her a position as special adviser within the corporate structure that manages the Graceland legacy.
