The Face That Could Have Been Han Solo

Perry King was born in Ohio in 1948 into a family with a weighty cultural legacy. His grandfather was the critic Maxwell Perkins, the editor who worked with Hemingway and Fitzgerald, but young King preferred motorcycles and the stage to other people's manuscripts. He studied at Yale and honed his craft in theater before jumping into film with a confidence that unsettled his co-stars.

In 1974, he joined the cast of The Lords of Flatbush alongside very young Sylvester Stallone and Henry Winkler. That film about teenagers in 1950s Brooklyn worked as a springboard for pure testosterone and leather jackets. King played Chico Tyrell with a mix of swagger and vulnerability that caught the attention of casting directors across half of Hollywood.

The big missed opportunity came shortly after.

George Lucas was on the final shortlist to play Han Solo in the first installment of Star Wars in 1977. The role ended up with Harrison Ford, but King never fully left the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Years later, in 1981, he voiced the smuggler in the saga's radio adaptations for National Public Radio. His vocal performance is considered by many experts to be the version most faithful to the character's original spirit.

From TV success to selective oblivion

The film industry tends to be cruel to faces that are too perfect. King worked under Andy Warhol in Bad in 1977 and starred in the violent Class of 1984 in 1982, playing a teacher harassed by a teen gang. But mass recognition didn't come from the big screen; it came through the antenna signal in American homes.

In 1984, he took the lead in Riptide, a detective series that capitalized on the sun, sea, and helicopter aesthetic of the era. He played Cody Allen for three seasons and 56 episodes. The show reached global ratings peaks and firmly typecast him as an action hero for television.

And then the phone stopped ringing as often.

King never left acting, but he took refuge in TV movies and episodic guest spots on procedural series. He became a recurring face in fast-turnaround productions while devoting his free time to his true passion: restoring vintage motorcycles. He owns a private collection of classic models that he repairs himself at his ranch in California.

Maturity Behind the Camera

The actor knew how to wait for his moment to tell his own stories without relying on the major studios. He spent decades trying to get personal projects off the ground until, in 2017, he finally premiered The Divide, his feature film directorial debut. He also took the lead role in the film, playing a rancher who begins to show the first symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

The shoot was done independently on a tight budget with a slow-paced narrative. It was an exercise in introspection, far removed from the explosions of his younger years. Critics praised his ability to handle dramatic pacing in a rural setting he knew perfectly from his own life experience away from the spotlight.

In 2020, he appeared in the historical drama The 24th under the direction of Kevin Willmott. His career has stayed active through supporting roles that bring the authority of someone who has survived five decades of change in the actors' union. He isn't chasing the fame he brushed against in the seventies, but the reliability of a craftsman who knows his tools well.

The production of The Divide cost approximately 1.5 million dollars.
