Ramón Rodríguez was born in Río Piedras, but his identity was shaped on the streets of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Before reading scripts, he spent hours dribbling a basketball, and that physical energy still shows in the way he walks in front of the camera. He played at the University of Michigan and at Wheeling Jesuit, but fate had other plans far from professional basketball courts.
In 2005, he landed a small role in Carlito's Way: Rise to Power and discovered that the adrenaline of filming was very similar to that of competition. His big break came shortly after, playing Renaldo in The Wire during 2006. That cult series forced him to understand the rhythm of quality television from the inside.
Sports gave him the discipline, but New York gave him the craft.
Working on a David Simon production is not for everyone. Rodríguez used those years to observe how a restrained, ensemble story is built. But the general public didn't truly recognize him until Michael Bay recruited him for the world of explosions and huge budgets.
In 2009, he took part in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, playing Leo Spitz. It was a radically different experience from the crime dramas of his early career, because the weight of digital technology dominated every scene. That film grossed more than 830 million dollars worldwide.
The momentum didn't slow down in the following years. In 2011 he shot Battle: Los Angeles, where he had to undergo real military training to bring Lieutenant William Martinez to life. The shoot was physically exhausting, and critics were not always kind to the script.
Television became his main refuge.
Despite the noise of big-budget productions, Rodríguez always returned to character-driven stories with rough edges. In 2014 he was part of Gang Related, and later joined the Marvel universe playing Bakuto in Iron Fist and The Defenders during 2017. But he was still missing a project that would let him carry the full weight of the plot on his shoulders.
The decisive change came when the script for Will Trent reached him in 2022. The series, based on Karin Slaughter's novels, offered him a complex role in which dyslexia and a traumatic past in the foster care system define the lead character. In 2023, the production premiered to a solid reception from American audiences.
Rodríguez didn't limit himself to acting in this crime drama. In 2023 he took on the role of executive producer to have a say in the creative decisions and the tone of the series. Filming for the second season moved to Atlanta during the first months of 2024.
Rodríguez decided he wanted to produce as well as act.
Filming the new episodes of Will Trent in 2024 involved days of more than twelve hours on location in Georgia. The production used Arri Alexa cameras to achieve a visual style close to classic film noir. The series wrapped its shooting schedule in April with a crew of more than two hundred people on the payroll.
