Rie Murakawa stepped into a professional recording booth for the first time in 2011. She was twenty-one years old, and her vocal range was something casting directors in Tokyo couldn't immediately categorize. Her voice didn't chase perfect harmony; it had a nervous energy that bordered on the theatrical.
In 2013, she landed the role of Hotaru Ichijo in Non Non Biyori. It was the moment the industry realized Murakawa could carry an entire series with silences and minimal exclamations. That contract changed her pay and put her in the credits of the most profitable productions of the decade.
And the gamble paid off.
But the real change of pace came in 2016. Murakawa lent her voice to Ram in Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World. She plays a dry, cutting character that forced the actress to drop her usual register by three tones. Specialized critics praised her ability to convey contempt without losing the vulnerability of the script.
Her music career officially began on June 1, 2016. That day she released Sweet Sensation under the Nippon Columbia label. It wasn't an idol whim but a technical extension of her acting training. She managed to sell thousands of copies in her first week without relying on big television marketing campaigns.
Nobody expected sales like that.
In 2021, she returned to her role in the third season of Non Non Biyori Nonstop. Producers noticed a maturity in her control of the airwaves that had not existed before. Murakawa spent years studying how to project her voice without straining her vocal cords during twelve-hour sessions.
For 2024, her participation in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V confirmed that her name remains a safe bet for production committees. But she prefers to keep a low profile at press events. She tends to avoid long interviews and focuses on the purely technical aspects of acting.
Her work in 2025 shows a shift toward darker roles.
During recording sessions for 2026 new animation projects, she kept a routine of absolute silence before entering the studio. Her contract with her current agency expires at the end of the decade. The latest sales figures for her official merchandise exceeded expectations for the sales department in Osaka.
