Sarah Rafferty isn't the result of a lucky break at a coffee-shop casting call. She was born in Connecticut and grew up in a home where culture was part of dinner conversation (her mother chaired the English department at a private school, and her father was a well-known painter). She studied at Yale University and graduated from its prestigious drama school. There she learned that acting is a matter of technique, not just instinct.
She spent much of the nineties and early 2000s jumping from one stage to another. She did classical theater and appeared in series such as Law & Order or Six Feet Under, in roles that barely lasted a breath on screen. But she kept piling up hours in independent productions in New York.
Persistence is often invisible until it stops being so.
In 2011, the project that redefined her career arrived. The role of Donna Paulsen on Suits wasn't designed to be the emotional center of the story, but Rafferty brought a mix of confidence and vulnerability that won over the writers. She worked for nine seasons alongside Gabriel Macht, with whom she has maintained a real friendship for decades. That natural chemistry carried through the screen.
And the gamble paid off.
Over the course of 134 episodes of the series, Rafferty built a profile of a smart woman who didn't need a law degree to run the firm. Her salary grew as her character became indispensable to the survival of the fictional New York law firm. But after the series ended in 2019, she looked to move away from stiletto heels and sharp dialogue.
In 2020, she put on a patient's gown for a storyline on Grey’s Anatomy. It was a strategic move to remind the industry that she could handle medical drama as convincingly as corporate drama. Shortly afterward, in 2021, she joined the cast of Chicago Med as Dr. Pamela Blake. On this Dick Wolf production, she had to learn real surgical protocols to lend authenticity to her operating room scenes.
In 2023, Rafferty temporarily moved to Calgary to shoot the first season of My Life with the Walter Boys. She plays Katherine Walter, a veterinarian and mother of a large family who takes in an orphan at their ranch in Colorado. The series became a ratings hit for Netflix and secured a second batch of episodes, which was scheduled for production in 2024.
Away from the spotlight, she keeps a private life, shared with her husband Santtu Seppälä and their two daughters. She avoids scandal and the covers of the gossip press, preferring to spend her time on social causes related to Alzheimer's and education. Her estimated net worth exceeds $10 million after more than twenty years of nonstop work in the American entertainment industry.
The renewal of her contract for the second season of the Netflix rural drama was signed with temporary exclusivity terms.
