Selma Blair arrived in New York at twenty with the goal of becoming a photographer. Before stepping onto a film set, she trained in acting at the Stella Adler Studio to overcome a shyness that seemed chronic.
Her first major role came in 1997 with the comedy In & Out. It was a brief appearance, but enough to get casting directors to notice that gaze that mixed vulnerability with dry sarcasm.
In 1999, Cruel Intentions hit theaters, and its commercial impact was immediate. Her kiss with Sarah Michelle Gellar won an MTV Award and put her at the center of late-1990s pop culture.
And the industry typecast her fast.
In the following years she took on teen-friendly projects such as Legally Blonde in 2001 or The Sweetest Thing in 2002. In the latter, she shared the screen with Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate in a bet on physical comedy that grossed 68 million dollars worldwide.
But auteur cinema and the fantasy genre offered her a more interesting refuge. In 2001 she worked under Todd Solondz in Storytelling, where she explored much darker registers, far removed from the blonde high school girl Hollywood wanted her to be.
Guillermo del Toro chose her in 2004 to play Liz Sherman in Hellboy. The Mexican director was looking for someone who could convey explosive restraint without big physical gestures.
Blair reprised her role in the 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The production was her biggest showcase of special effects and solidified her presence in big-budget filmmaking during that decade.
Despite these successes, the actress never quite broke into the circle of top-tier A-list stars. She worked steadily in television and independent film, but always kept a low profile that kept her out of the tabloid headlines.
In 2012, she joined the cast of the series Anger Management alongside Charlie Sheen. She left the show in 2013 after fifty episodes, following direct tensions with the lead and a disagreement over filming schedules.
But her body said enough.
In 2018, Selma Blair revealed that she was living with multiple sclerosis. For years she had been dealing with unexplained symptoms, such as frequent falls and extreme fatigue, that doctors couldn't pinpoint.
The news changed her relationship with the public eye dramatically. Instead of withdrawing, she chose to show the process of her treatment with a raw honesty that sought not sympathy but visibility for the disease.
In 2021, the documentary Introducing, Selma Blair premiered, directed by Rachel Fleit. The film shows the stem cell transplant she underwent and the immediate physical aftereffects of chemotherapy.
Her career became a platform for raising awareness. In 2022, she published her memoir Mean Baby, in which she describes her struggles with alcoholism since childhood and her complicated relationship with her mother.
That same year she took part in the competition Dancing with the Stars. Her run on the show ended in the fifth week, when doctors advised her to withdraw to avoid irreparable bone damage caused by the intensity of rehearsals.
In 2023, the Gap brand featured her in its fall advertising campaign to highlight the importance of representing people with disabilities in fashion. The contract stipulated the use of her personalized cane in all the campaign's graphic materials.
The production of the film The Great Lillian Hall in 2024 cast her in a supporting role opposite Jessica Lange. Filming was scheduled in shorter days to respect the rest periods required by her neurological condition.
