Simu Liu was fired from the consulting firm Deloitte in 2012, and that saved his professional life. He didn't fit into the cubicles of Toronto. His exit was quick and without any notable severance.
He looked for work as an extra in online ads to pay his rent. He appeared as a background extra in Pacific Rim in 2013, and that Guillermo del Toro shoot changed his priorities. He realized he preferred throwing fictional punches to reviewing annual financial statements.
Nobody expected him in Hollywood.
But the actor persisted. In 2015, he landed a role in the series Blood and Water and began to understand how the Canadian industry worked. It wasn't enough to comfortably pay the bills, but it helped him build a real résumé.
In 2016, he landed Kim's Convenience. He played Jung Kim for five seasons and became a familiar face in Canadian homes. It was a sitcom, but he wanted real action and bigger-scale projects.
In 2014, he posted a public message on social media asking Marvel to talk about an Asian superhero. He got no immediate response. Five years had to pass before Disney's machinery took notice of his profile.
In 2019, he was announced as the lead of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The production cost 150 million dollars, and much of the commercial weight rested on an actor who had barely come out of national television.
And the gamble paid off.
The film premiered in 2021 and grossed more than 430 million dollars worldwide. Liu did not use stunt doubles for many of his fight choreographies. He trained in martial arts for months so the long takes wouldn't have to be cut in the final edit.
In 2023, he traded punches for dancing in Barbie. He played one of the versions of Ken and showed he could handle physical comedy with ease. Shooting Greta Gerwig required preparation focused on body control and aesthetic parody.
Liu decided he didn't want to depend on casting directors' calls. In 2024, he premiered Arthur the King alongside Mark Wahlberg and took part in the sci-fi film Atlas for Netflix.
But his real interest shifted toward the boardroom. He founded his own production company, 4:12 Entertainment, to develop projects where Asian actors could play lead roles beyond martial arts stereotypes.
His schedule filled up with technical commitments.
In 2024, he shot Jackpot! under Paul Feig's direction and signed deals to star in a suspense series titled Seven Wonders. The production contract includes creative control clauses over the final script and the choice of supporting cast.
The second installment of his Marvel franchise was scheduled to enter preproduction after Disney's calendar adjustments. The estimated budget for the sequel exceeds 200 million dollars, not counting global marketing costs.
