So Joo-yeon stands exactly 1.57 meters tall. That isn't the height Seoul casting agents usually look for to lead major productions, but her face worked instantly in advertising for 2017. She started by promoting oral hygiene products and urban clothing brands before a music video came knocking at her door.
Her entry into acting didn't come through traditional drama schools. In 2018 she starred in the web series Not Alright, But It’s Alright, playing an office intern. That project racked up millions of views on digital platforms because it connected with a generation of exhausted young workers.
The industry typecast her quickly.
Many casting directors saw only sweetness in her dimples and her bob haircut. But she chose projects where that image could be broken or at least tempered with a dry realism. In 2018 she appeared in the horror film Whispering to prove she could scream as well as she could smile.
In 2020, she got the chance to join a massively successful franchise. She joined the second season of Dr. Romantic as Dr. Yoon Ah-reum. She won Best New Actress at the SBS Drama Awards that year for a performance that avoided the genre's melodramatic excesses.
And the gamble paid off.
That character gave her a level of visibility that independent film could not offer. But So Joo-yeon didn't abandon the short-form formats that had first brought her fame. That same year, she shot A Love So Beautiful (2020), an adaptation of a very popular Chinese drama. The series was distributed worldwide and put her on the radar of international viewers in Spanish-speaking and English-speaking markets.
Working on fast-paced projects helped her sharpen her reactions. In 2021 she appeared in Lovestruck in the City, where she shared the screen with heavyweight names in the industry. Korean critics praised her ability to hold her own in a cast full of established stars.
The year 2022 marked a major shift in tone in her career with Seasons of Blossom. She played Han So-mang in a story that dealt with teen suicide and lasting trauma over the years. It was her most sober work to date and firmly moved her away from her image as a TV commercial actress.
She returned to the operating room in 2023 for the third season of Dr. Romantic. Repeating a role over several years often traps performers, but she used her character's development to show a more solid acting maturity. The series reached peak viewership of 16.8% in South Korea during its free-to-air broadcast.
In 2024, she joined the cast of The Midnight Romance in Hagwon. In this production, she played Nam Cheong-mi, a private academy teacher who fights to climb the ladder in the competitive Daechi-dong neighborhood. The script demanded complete control of the technical dialogue about the Korean education system.
Filming for this drama wrapped after several months of long days on closed sets. So Joo-yeon signed her contract with the agency E&S Entertainment. The contract called for a promotional schedule that stretched through the first half of 2024.
