Azur is a blond, blue-eyed boy, the son of the lord of a noble household in medieval Europe. From childhood, he is raised alongside Asmar, the dark-skinned son of Jénane, the wet nurse who arrived from overseas to care for them. The two grow up as brothers and hear from Jénane the story of a imprisoned djinn fairy who is waiting for a good and brave prince to set her free. But when Azur begins to feel jealous of the maternal love he shares with Asmar, his father makes a decision. He sends the boy to the city to study with a tutor and immediately dismisses the wet nurse and her son. The two friends are forced to part without fully understanding why.

Trivia about Azur & Asmar: The Princes' Quest

To finance the film, the production company Nord-Ouest Production raised ten million euros, one million of which came from a tax credit granted by the French Ministry of Economy.
Ocelot did not subtitle or dub the Arabic dialogue because, as he explained, one of the immigrant's problems is that he neither understands nor is understood.
The scene of the two babies nursing at the beginning of the film was deemed "unshowable" by American distributors, which complicated its release in the United States.
At the IFC Center in New York, the film expanded its screenings into a second week after all of the first week's showings sold out.
