His Triumph Changed the World Forever

In 1893, Mahatma Gandhi has just arrived in the Colony of Natal, in South Africa. Ben Kingsley plays the lead, who is traveling by train when a white passenger objects to his presence in a compartment reserved for white people. The argument ends with Gandhi being thrown off the coach, an episode that suddenly confronts him with the racial discrimination that governs life in the colony. Richard Attenborough directs a film that starts from that first clash to follow the journey of a man who will become a central figure in the Indian independence movement. The opening lays out the humiliation, the reaction of a newcomer, and the gap between what the laws say and what those who suffer them feel.

Trivia about Gandhi

More than 300,000 extras were used for the funeral scene, the largest number for any film according to Guinness World Records.
Attenborough tried to revive the project in 1976 with financing from Warner Bros., but the declaration of a state of emergency in India by Indira Gandhi made filming impossible.
Attenborough spent 18 years trying to get the film made, and the death of Nehru in 1964 was one of many setbacks.
In 1952, Gabriel Pascal signed an agreement with Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to produce a film about Gandhi, but he died in 1954 before the preparations were complete.

Quotes by Gandhi

  • I was called to the bar in London, and enrolled at the High Court of Chancery. I am, therefore, an attorney. And, since I am in your eyes coloured, I think we can deduce that there is at least one coloured attorney in South Africa.
  • Lord Irwin, Viceroy: Mr. Gandhi will find that it takes a great deal more than a pinch of salt to bring down the British Empire.
  • Whenever I despair, I remember that the way of truth and love has always won. There may be tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they may seem invincible, but in the end, they always fail. Think of it: always.
  • An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
  • I am a Muslim and a Hindu and a Christian and a Jew and so are all of you.
  • The function of a civil resistance is to provoke response and we will continue to provoke until they respond or change the law. They are not in control; we are.
