Every night, Amadeo reads a bedtime story to his son Matías and asks him to use his imagination as he listens. Matías spends almost the whole day playing on his tablet, and Amadeo fears that this habit is pulling them apart. The story takes him back to his childhood. Amadeo was a shy kid who worked in a bar, where he met Laura and fell in love with her. He showed her the bar's foosball table, a table soccer game whose players of the striped team he had modified. The film is directed by Juan José Campanella.

Trivia about Underdogs

The U.S. distributor was set to release the film on August 27, 2014, but the date was pushed back several times. One week before the planned date of 2015, the release was canceled entirely.

The film achieved the best opening of any Argentine film at the box office, selling 418 445 tickets in its first four days in theaters, according to the research firm Ultracine.

With a budget of 21 million dollars, the film is the most expensive in Argentine cinema history and also the most expensive Latin American animated film ever made.

Metegol is the first film made in Latin America to meet the quality standards of the world's leading film studios. HP, Intel and Autodesk provided the necessary technical support.

The animation was handled by Mundoloco CGI, based in Buenos Aires, while Prana Studios, headquartered in Mumbai, took care of lighting, compositing, visual effects and rendering.

In 2022, a TV series based on the film aired under the title Underdogs United, premiering on March 7 on the Latin American version of the Discovery Kids channel.

The film took five years of work and the involvement of about 300 people, including animators, actors, illustrators and technicians.

Juan José Campanella confirmed that there would be a sequel to the film, planned for 2015, although it never made it to theaters.
