Kathleen Kelly runs an independent children's bookstore on New York's Upper West Side, a business she inherited from her mother. Her love life unfolds alongside Frank Navasky, a left-leaning columnist for the New York Observer who pours himself into his typewriter, while she prefers her laptop. Online, Kathleen goes by "Shopgirl" and writes emails to a stranger she met in a chat room. Her peace of mind crumbles when a large bookstore chain decides to open a branch right next to hers. Heading the chain is Joe Fox, the owner's son, whose way of doing business rubs her the wrong way. The film is directed by Nora Ephron and stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

[to Kathleen Kelly] I would have asked for your number… and I wouldn't have been able to wait 24 hours before calling and asking, "How about coffee, drinks, dinner, a movie, for as long as we both shall live?"
[to Joe Fox] You were spying on me, weren't you? You probably rented those children.
[to Kathleen Kelly]The Olympia Report deluxe Electric. Report…as in gunshot.
[to Frank Navasky, at dinner party] You know, what's always fascinated me about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg is how old they looked when they were really just our age.
[to Christina and Kathleen Kelly] As far as I'm concerned, the Internet is just another way to be rejected by a woman.
[to Kathleen Kelly about her internet friend NY152] Maybe he is fat. Yup. He's fat. He's a fatty.
