Synopsis of Ghosts

Alison Cooper inherits Button House, a large, crumbling country mansion, from a distant relative. Together with her husband, Mike, she decides to move in and renovate it into a luxury hotel, although her lawyer advises her to sell the property. What they don't know is that the house is haunted by ghosts from different eras who died on its grounds and who argue endlessly with one another. The spirits, invisible and intangible to the living, take a dim view of the newcomers and start planning how to get rid of them. Created by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Laurence Rickard, Jim Howick, Martha Howe-Douglas and Ben Willbond, the comedy airs on BBC One and stars Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.

Trivia about Ghosts

The house where the show is filmed is West Horsley Place in Surrey, a mansion that writer Bamber Gascoigne inherited in 2014 from his great-aunt, the Duchess of Roxburghe, under circumstances similar to those in the series.

The haunted house idea was one of the first the writers developed after finishing Horrible Histories, but they had doubts at first and created the sitcom Yonderland for Sky One instead.

Alison's character was inspired by an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? in which EastEnders actor Danny Dyer discovered he was descended from Edward III of England.

The BBC announced a second season one week after episode 6 aired, with a consolidated average of 3.7 million viewers across the series.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has a 87% approval rating based on 15 reviews, with an average score of 7.8/10.

In April 2021, the comedy received two BAFTA nominations: for Scripted Comedy and for the BAFTA Craft Award for Comedy Writing.

The BBC confirmed in 2023 that the fifth season would be the last; the team explained that filming of the final series had already wrapped and that it aired that year.

The series will return with the film Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, whose cast will bring back the original creators and stars; the production received the green light from BBC Film, Lionsgate and BBC Studios.
