Synopsis of The Addams Family

The Addams Family is an American sitcom that aired on ABC between 1964 and 1966. The Addams live at 0001 Cemetery Ridge, in a lush, gloomy Victorian mansion, and share their home with a towering butler and Thing, a hand that pops out of wooden boxes in various corners of the house. Gomez, a wealthy and enthusiastic man, is hopelessly in love with his refined wife Morticia. Together they live with their children Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester and Grandmama. They all share macabre interests and supernatural abilities, though the series never explains where they come from. The plot is driven by the clash between their extravagant lifestyle and a normal environment that considers them strange. John Astin and Carolyn Jones lead the cast of this family, which is based on Charles Addams' cartoons.

Trivia about The Addams Family

The series' mansion was based on a Victorian house at 21 Chester Place, in the West Adams district. A painter added a third floor and a Gothic tower to a photograph of the building.

The finger-snap in the theme song came from an improvisation by Vic Mizzy when he presented his composition for approval.

ABC wanted to save money by using stock music for the series, but producer David Levy insisted on hiring Vic Mizzy.

In 1965, an album featuring all of Vic Mizzy's compositions for the series, titled Original Music from The Addams Family, was released.

To set itself apart from The Munsters, which premiered at the same time, both series avoided hiring guest stars.

Charles Addams felt the characters on the show were only half as evil as those in his cartoons, although he enjoyed the rights.

The series ended in 1966 after two seasons and 64 episodes; its first season ranked 23 in the ratings according to Nielsen measurements, behind The Munsters.

After the cancellation, the producers gave Carolyn Jones Morticia's oval-backed wicker chair, which the actress kept in her bedroom for the rest of her life.
