Synopsis of Rose Red

Joyce Reardon, an unconventional parapsychology professor, takes a group of people with psychic gifts to Rose Red, a huge, old-fashioned mansion in Seattle. Her goal is to gather data that can serve as scientific proof of paranormal phenomena. The house has a reputation for being haunted, as at least twenty-three people have disappeared or died there. Its interior seems to change and grow larger, something that doesn't happen from the outside. The visitors agree to spend several days there, and it soon becomes clear that the mansion keeps secrets of its own. The series, created by Stephen King and aired on ABC, follows this team as they try to document what happens within its walls, with Nancy Travis in the lead role.

Trivia about Rose Red

Steven Spielberg asked Stephen King to write a haunted house story. King pitched the Rose Red idea to him in 1996, conceived as a loose take on The Haunting, the 1963 film.

Stephen King partly based the house's concept on the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, though they added that the inside could seem larger and different from the outside.

The producers spent $500,000 to restore many of the ground-floor rooms at Thornewood to their early twentieth-century look. That mansion served as the exterior of Rose Red.

The computer-animated ghosts created by XFX cost $150,000 each. The miniseries was delivered to ABC in early September 2001.

For a time, fans and the press believed that Stephen King or his wife, Tabitha King, had written the miniseries' tie-in novel, until it was revealed that the author was Ridley Pearson.

Rose Red aired during sweeps week and averaged 18.5 million viewers over three nights, with a 8.5 rating.

Craig Stearns won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in 2002 for his work on the miniseries.

David Dukes died of a heart attack while playing tennis before filming his final scene; the production completed the role of Professor Miller with a body double.
