Alexis Cruz joined the set of Stargate in 1994 without knowing that the role of a young native on a remote planet would keep them busy for nearly a decade. They were nineteen years old, and the Bronx was still very much present in the way they walked. That movie, Roland Emmerich, was an unexpected box office hit that grossed nearly $200 million worldwide.
But what was truly strange happened three years later. When the franchise moved to television with Stargate SG-1 in 1997, the producers decided to replace nearly the entire original cast. Only Cruz survived the purge of actors. He reprised his role as Kasuf and became the only real link between the big screen and the small one.
And that was his first big lesson about the industry.
Cruz was born in New York in 1974 and grew up in a family with Puerto Rican roots. He studied at Boston University because he knew charisma is useless without the technique to hold a thirty-second close-up. By 1987, he had already appeared in The Cosby Show, but it was the Arizona desert that gave him a name in Los Angeles casting offices.
Between 1997 and 2003, the actor enjoyed a stretch of stability that few of his generation can claim. He played Rafael on Touched by an Angel. That job allowed him to move away from the racial stereotypes that flooded late-1990s scripts. He wasn't cast as a gang member or a victim. He was a heavenly messenger in one of the most-watched shows on American television.
The system does not always reward pure talent.
Despite her constant presence on television, Cruz never stopped looking for projects that would take her out of her technical comfort zone. In 1998, she appeared in Why Do Fools Fall in Love alongside Halle Berry. It was a busy period in which she auditioned for dozens of roles to prove her range went far beyond science fiction or family drama.
Because for him, acting has always been a craft and not a pursuit of magazine covers.
In 2006, he joined the cast of Shark to play Martin Allende. He worked side by side with James Woods and learned how tension is managed on a high-budget legal drama. The series lasted two seasons on air before CBS canceled it in 2008.
Cruz is one of those actors casting directors call when they need someone who understands the rhythm of a scene without requiring lengthy technical explanations about framing. In 2009, he had a supporting role in the horror film Drag Me to Hell directed by Sam Raimi. It was a brief appearance, but it taught him how genre cinema works with a master of suspense.
Over the years, her focus shifted toward teaching and more personal production. She began teaching classes and seminars because she felt the industry was losing respect for academic training. In 2017, she appeared in the action series The Brave, and in 2021 she took part in an episode of The Blacklist, playing Pablo De Leon.
And it worked.
His career is measured not by flashy awards but by his ability to stay active in an industry that goes through new faces every six months. In 2024, Cruz remained involved in film teaching while overseeing independent short film projects on the East Coast. His filmography exceeds 40 titles across film and television since he debuted as a child in 1985.
In 2024, he combined his teaching work with post-production on short pieces shot on minimal budgets in New York.
