Amir Arison spent nearly a decade drifting in and out of fictional police precincts and TV emergency rooms before anyone remembered his name. In 2003, he made his debut on Guiding Light in a bit part. It marked the start of a survival phase as an actor in New York, where one-line supporting roles paid the rent.
Early in his career, he appeared in productions such as Law & Order and The Jury. His name, however, didn't appear on the main posters. His training at Columbia University gave him the technical background to navigate the industry without losing hope. He worked hard but remained an unknown face to the general public.
It was no statistical coincidence.
In 2013, his career changed when he accepted the role of Aram Mojtabai in The Blacklist. The character was designed to appear in a single episode as a support IT technician. The writers saw something in the way he delivered his lines and ended up writing for him over nine consecutive seasons. Arison brought a nervous humanity to a series that often tended toward cold, procedural storytelling.
And the character stuck.
Leaving a massively successful series on American television is often considered career suicide for a supporting actor. But in 2022, Arison decided his run on NBC had come to an end. He wanted something that would demand a different kind of physical performance. He moved to the theater to star in the Broadway adaptation of The Kite Runner.
He played Amir in a production that kept him on stage for nearly the three hours the show lasted. It was a risky decision, since it meant giving up the financial stability of a long-running production. Critics that year praised his ability to carry the dramatic weight of a story about guilt and redemption in Afghanistan.
The stage allows no editing tricks.
That same 2022, he took part in the Hulu miniseries The Dropout. He played Avie Tevanian in a story about the Theranos fraud. It was a return to supporting roles, but with a different kind of prestige. He was no longer an actor looking for a break; he was an actor choosing where to appear.
Arison didn't just wait for casting calls. In 2024, he directed and produced the short film Fortunate Son, a personal project exploring complex family dynamics. His interest in directing grew out of years spent watching how scenes were put together at major TV studios.
In 2025, he joined the cast of the second season of Severance for Apple TV+. The series, directed by Ben Stiller, marked his entry into one of the most secretive and critically acclaimed productions of the decade. There he worked alongside names such as Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette in a corporate science fiction aesthetic.
But his career always returns to its roots.
Despite his forays into independent film, such as 20 Weeks in 2017 or Jane Wants a Boyfriend in 2015, his natural habitat remains character-driven drama with sharp edges. He isn't chasing red carpet stardom. He focuses on precision in the script and on building roles that bring an uncomfortable truth to the screen.
In 2024, the short film Fortunate Son earned selections at international festivals under his own direction and executive production.
