Andrés Parra is not a method actor in the usual sense. He is someone who empties himself on every shoot. In 2012, his performance as Pablo Escobar in Escobar, el patrón del mal gave him a visibility that nearly consumed him. Colombian and international audiences began to confuse the man with the monster.
In Bogotá, he was trained under the strict discipline of Teatro Libre. There he learned that acting is not a game of mirrors. It is a work of mental carpentry that requires hours of technical observation.
Parra doesn't act, he transforms.
But the actor did not want to be trapped in fictional drug trafficking. So he sought out roles that forced him to reinvent himself in dramatic ways. And that decision saved his mental health.
Many actors would have milked the Escobar role for decades. Parra decided otherwise. In 2017, he accepted the challenge of playing Hugo Chávez in El Comandante. It was a risky move that brought him political criticism in several Latin American countries.
For that role, he had to study hundreds of hours of footage. He sought the exact tone of the voice and the rhythm of the hands of the Venezuelan leader. The result was a physical transformation that left the producers of Sony Pictures speechless.
The industry kept asking for more blood.
He responded with sports satire. In 2020, he starred in El Presidente for Amazon Prime Video. He played Sergio Jadue, the Chilean sports official involved in the FIFA Gate scandal. The physical change was evident. He gained weight and adopted an accent so precise that it fooled Chileans themselves.
In 2022, he returned to that same character for a second season. The shoot stretched across several countries and required three hours of makeup logistics every day before filming began.
In 2023, he returned to dark cinema with Los Iniciados. The film is inspired by the literary universe of Mario Mendoza. In it, he plays Frank Molina, an alcoholic and bipolar journalist who lives in a city where it always rains.
This role demanded a very high psychological load. Parra admits that the shoot was exhausting because of the intensity of the character and the atmosphere on set. But the result on screen confirmed that his range goes far beyond political or criminal leaders.
In 2024, his focus changed completely.
During that period, he decided to step away from big action shoots to focus on his well-being. He began producing his own content in which he talks about anxiety and the weight of fame. In 2024, he took part in Los Iniciados: El diario de las sombras, staying true to his commitment to genre cinema in Colombia.
His academic training at the Teatro Libre Acting School remains his technical foundation. He spent five years studying the classics there before stepping onto a television set. His contract for his latest production in Bogotá included a ten-hour rest clause of mandatory rest between shooting days.
