Karla Souza did not seek the easy path of telenovelas when she decided to leave Mexico. In 2005, she settled in London to train at the Central School of Speech and Drama. It was there that she understood acting required an almost military discipline. For her, talent without technique was simply noise.
When she returned to Mexico, the industry tried to typecast her in supporting roles as a privileged girl. But she was waiting for an opportunity that would change the commercial rules of the game in her country. That moment came with a script many other actors had turned down for being too risky.
In 2013, the release of Nosotros los Nobles transformed Mexican cinema. The film grossed more than $26 million and became a sociological phenomenon. Karla played Bárbara Noble with a mix of irony and vulnerability that connected with millions of viewers.
And the whole country learned her name.
That success allowed her to choose her next steps with unusual freedom. Instead of settling into local romantic comedies, she decided to pack her bags again. Los Angeles was the logical next goal for someone who spoke three languages fluently and wanted to control her own narrative.
In 2014, producer Shonda Rhimes cast her in the ensemble of How to Get Away with Murder. For six seasons she brought Laurel Castillo to life. Sharing the set with Viola Davis required a level of rigor that American television rarely grants to foreign actors.
The filming pace was frantic. They shot one-hour episodes in just eight intense working days. But Souza used that time to observe how the machinery of the major studios worked from the inside. Her plan had always been to stop being just a face on the poster and take the reins of production.
Producing was her only way out.
In 2017, she starred in Todos queremos a alguien. It was one of the most-watched films of that year in Mexican theaters. But lighter projects began to weigh on her professional conscience, and she decided to seek stories with a much rawer social undercurrent.
The release of La Caída in 2022 marked a complete change of direction in her career. She spent three years training as a professional diver to play an athlete who denounces sexual abuse in sports. She didn't want stunt doubles, because she wanted the physical pain to be real in every pool scene.
The film won the International Emmy for Best Actress in 2023. That recognition validated her work as a producer interested in uncomfortable topics. In 2021, she also explored family comedy in the United States with the series Home Economics. There she showed she could handle the rhythm of a sitcom without losing her naturalness.
In 2024, her name appears in the production credits of several independent projects seeking funding in international markets. The budget for La Caída was secured after years of refusals from traditional sponsors.
