Ruthie Murphy didn't have any memorable lines in the McCallister house. But Anna Slotky was there, in the hellish logistics of shooting Home Alone in 1990. Her role was one of Kevin's cousins, and her presence added volume to the family chaos that defined the comedy of the nineties.
And she did so with a composure that foreshadowed her future outside show business.
In 1992, she reprised the role in the New York sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Those large-scale shoots directed by Chris Columbus were her early education. Slotky quickly learned that at the big Hollywood studios, child actors are cogs in a very precise technical machine. Unlike some of her fellow cast members, she never sought absolute child-star status.
Her television work was steady during the first half of the decade. In 1991, she joined The Torkelsons to play Ruth Ann. The NBC series aimed for a different, slice-of-life feel, and Slotky fit the profile of a young actress who could handle rapid-fire dialogue without overacting. But the industry began to change, and teen roles became more competitive and stereotyped.
She appeared in episodes of Sister, Sister and 3rd Rock from the Sun between 1995 and 1997. These were brief appearances that paid the bills while her interest in acting faded. Slotky sensed that her life would not unfold among production trailers and endless makeup sessions.
Before turning twenty, she decided that law offered a mental structure that scripts denied her. It wasn't a desperate escape due to a lack of work. It was a planned transition toward academic life. In 2000, she definitively stepped away from the cameras to focus on her studies at Occidental College.
And the gamble paid off.
She graduated and later earned her law degree from the University of California, Davis. In 2008, she was admitted to the State Bar of California. Anna Slotky Reitano stopped being just a name in the credits and became a public defense professional in Los Angeles. Her surroundings traded the spotlights of film sets for the fluorescent light of the courthouses.
For years, she worked as a court-appointed attorney defending citizens without resources. This stage was essential to understanding the cracks in the American judicial system. Slotky specialized in criminal law and completely stepped away from any event tied to nineties nostalgia. For her, acting was a childhood memory, not a professional identity.
In 2022, she decided that her experience in the trenches of public defense was needed on the bench. She ran as a candidate for judge of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. Her campaign avoided any reference to her past in film. It focused on reforming the system and on procedural fairness for the most vulnerable defendants.
It was a brave decision in a complex political environment.
But the election results in June 2022 were not in her favor. Despite winning significant support from progressive groups, she did not win the judgeship. Slotky received 31% of the vote against rivals with greater funding and backing from police unions. That defeat did not lead her back to acting but instead reaffirmed her legal work.
In 2024, she continues to work as a defense attorney in California's public sector. Her professional license number 254314 remains active and is tied to the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office.
