Austin O'Brien entered movies through the big door of science fiction and the most resounding box-office flop of the nineties. In 1992 he debuted with a supporting role in The Lawnmower Man, but it was his choice to play Danny Madigan in Last Action Hero that defined his public image. That 1993 film aimed to dominate the summer box office with Arnold Schwarzenegger as its main draw.
But reality turned out differently. The film crashed against the release of Jurassic Park, and O’Brien’s career became tied to a cursed project that time has since come to vindicate. Before turning thirteen, he already knew what it meant to deal with the pressure of a 85 million dollar budget that didn't bring in what was expected.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
In 1994 he traded explosions for teen drama in My Girl 2. There he shared the screen with Anna Chlumsky in an attempt to repeat the success of the first installment. That role as Nick Sigel allowed him to distance himself from the action-kid label and move into more conventional, friendlier cinema.
As the 1990s went on, his presence in major productions declined. He appeared in Apollo 13 in 1995, playing the son of Jim Lovell, a minor role in one of the most awarded films of that year. He wasn't chasing mass fame, and that showed in his later choices.
Over the following years, he alternated appearances on TV series such as ER and Promised Land. He never felt the need to stay in the front line of Hollywood at any cost. In 2004 he appeared in Runaway Jury, a John Grisham adaptation that marked one of his last brushes with large-scale commercial cinema.
He decided that his future was not in front of the spotlight.
O’Brien trained at Azusa Pacific University and began to take an interest in image capture from a technical perspective. Rather than fighting for supporting roles in procedural series, he preferred to found his own photography company. Austin O’Brien Photography became his main professional occupation, far from the film sets of Los Angeles.
His last credited appearance in science fiction film dates back to 2011 with the movie Rain from Stars. Since then, he has focused his efforts on wedding, portrait, and commercial event photography. It's a change of direction that many child actors struggle to handle with such ease.
There's no trace of bitterness in his few interviews. He lives in Colorado and runs his business with a complete discretion that contrasts with the noise of his childhood. After all, movies were just a phase of training before he found his true visual vocation.
In 2021, his name resurfaced on specialist forums marking the anniversary of his early work. But he stayed out of any nostalgic reunions or fan events. His professional life is now measured in shutter speeds and focal lengths.
The child who traveled inside an action movie chose to stay out of the spotlight.
