Josh Keaton rarely walks the red carpets of major European festivals. But his voice is the connective tissue of a generation that grew up glued to a CRT screen. In 1991, he made his debut in The New Adam-12 and soon after got caught up in No Authority. That boy band backed by Michael Jackson seemed like the end of his creative path.
Music ended up being a formality.
In 1992, he took part in the musical Newsies for Disney. That experience taught him that voice control was far more profitable than constant physical exposure in front of Hollywood cameras. Keaton soon understood that his work tool wasn't his face but his voice box.
The dubbing industry in the United States changed for him in 2008. That was the year he accepted the role of Peter Parker in The Spectacular Spider-Man. For many comic book purists, this version remains the most faithful adaptation of the character to the small screen.
Keaton decided that Spider-Man shouldn't sound like a superhero who cracks jokes. He played him as a stressed-out teenager who used humor as a shield against financial hardship. And that was the key to his success.
But the market doesn't always reward acting quality. In 2011, he was replaced in the series Ultimate Spider-Man by Drake Bell in a purely commercial decision by the network. That technical blow forced him to seek refuge in the high-budget video game industry.
The market doesn't forgive changes in register.
In 2004, he had already laid the groundwork for that transition with his role as Revolver Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It was painstaking vocal craftsmanship. He had to sound like a younger version of a villain players already knew from earlier installments (set chronologically later).
Keaton's technique is built on mechanical control and the study of breathing rhythm. In 2016, he took on the role of Shiro in Voltron: Legendary Defender for Netflix. Modern dubbing demands a naturalness that the animation films of the nineties did not allow.
In 2023, he returned to the arachnid universe with a brief appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, voicing the 26496 universe's variant. It was a direct nod to fans who had been asking for his return for more than a decade.
Keaton is paid per recording session according to the standard rates of the SAG-AFTRA union. In 2024, these figures run to about 1,000 dollars for each four-hour day of work in a professional studio.
