Kay Lenz was not the typical pretty face of the 1970s. Clint Eastwood chose her to star in Breezy in 1973 after seeing her at an audition where the actress barely tried to impress. She was nineteen years old and had a gaze that mixed vulnerability with a toughness unusual for her age.
That role put her on the Hollywood map overnight.
She played a teenager who falls in love with a much older man. Critics were merciless toward the film but spared Lenz. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year and helped her avoid the ingénue roles the industry often pushed on young actresses.
In 1975, she starred in Blue Collar Highway opposite Jan-Michael Vincent. It was a low-budget production that did very well at drive-in theaters of the era. Lenz brought an unusual dignity to characters who, in the hands of other actresses, would have been mere decoration in stories of testosterone and asphalt.
In 1976, she stepped into the shoes of Kate Jordache in the miniseries Thorn Birds. Hmm
She married David Cassidy in 1977.
The relationship lasted six years and ended in divorce in 1983. During that time, Lenz tried to keep a low professional profile. She took on smaller projects because she preferred the calm of anonymity to the media circus surrounding her husband. As a result, her career entered a period of voluntary dormancy.
In 1987, she returned to genre films with House IV. It wasn't a great movie, but it served as a reminder that Lenz still had the ability to hold a close-up without blinking. Lenz understood that acting was more about observing than talking.
In 1988, the series Midnight Caller restored the prestige that the tabloids had taken from her. She won an Emmy for her role as Tina Cassidy. It was a victory both technical and moral. Producers realized Lenz worked better in gritty drama than in studio romantic comedies.
And the gamble paid off.
From there, her career became a string of collaborations on quality series. In 1994, she voiced characters in the animated series The Tick. The format didn't matter to her as long as the character had some edge or an inner contradiction to explore.
In 2003, she appeared in an episode of JAG, and in 2013 she took part in the independent drama The Downside of Bliss. Lenz never stopped working, but she stepped away from the noise of Los Angeles to focus on a more private life. In 2022, she shot new scenes for the final cut of The Downside of Bliss under the direction of Ron McPherson.
The production's estimated budget was two million dollars.
