Barbara Ann Luna was born in Manhattan in 1939. Her family tree mixed Italian, Hungarian, Filipino and Spanish roots. That genetic blend gave her a look that casting directors in the fifties could not fit into a single box.
Richard Rodgers discovered her when she was still a child. He hired her for the Broadway premiere of South Pacific in 1949. That stage experience taught her that her looks would be her best tool and, at the same time, her biggest obstacle in the industry.
And the contract was signed.
In 1961, she shot The Devil at 4 O’Clock. She had to play a blind young woman on a Pacific island alongside Spencer Tracy and Frank Sinatra. The film was a resounding box-office success. But the press of the time focused more on her beauty than on her ability to hold her own in scenes opposite two giants of classic cinema.
1967 was the year that changed her relationship with pop culture forever. She appeared in the episode Mirror, Mirror of the series Star Trek. Her character was Marlena Moreau. That uniform and her chemistry with William Shatner fixed her in the memory of an audience that still analyzes every frame of that episode today.
That role was a financial blessing.
But typecasting came quickly. Producers only called her when they needed a woman of vaguely ethnic features. That is how her appearances in Zorro, The Wild Wild West and Mission: Impossible came about. She worked tirelessly but always under the shadow of the exotic woman of the moment.
In 1961, she married actor Doug McClure. The marriage barely lasted two years. The Los Angeles tabloids tried to exploit the breakup, but she preferred to focus on shoots such as Five Weeks in a Balloon in 1962.
Throughout the seventies and eighties, her work pace did not slow down. She appeared in The Love Boat and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. In 1986, she accepted a recurring role on the serial One Life to Live. There she played Maria Roberts for more than seventy episodes.
It was her ticket back to the studios.
Fan nostalgia for science fiction rescued her from obscurity in the new century. In 2004, she returned to the universe that brought her worldwide fame. She took part in the independent production Star Trek: New Voyages, reprising a variation of her original role. She repeated the experience in 2011 within the same fan-created franchise.
Her last credited appearance in a fiction production was in 2019 in the short film Unbelievable!!!!!. The film had a budget of five million dollars and brought together dozens of former actors from the galactic saga.
BarBara Luna lives in Los Angeles and stays in direct contact with fans through specialized conventions. In 2023, her participation in several events commemorating sixties television was confirmed. Her official filmography tops one hundred titles across film and television.
