Joel Schumacher was looking for a street-smart boy with a gaze that wasn't made of plastic. In 1993, the director sent his casting team to scout schools and community centers across the American South. They wanted someone who understood fear but could still hold his ground.
Brad Renfro lived with his grandmother in a prefab house in Knoxville. He had no dramatic training and no influential parents in the industry. But when he stepped in front of the camera for the audition for The Client, the crew knew the role of Mark Sway was his.
He was ten years old and had no prior experience.
The film's release in 1994 grossed more than 117 million dollars at box offices around the world. That boy with the clipped gestures held his own in close-ups opposite Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones without blinking. His performance wasn't technical but raw and purely instinctive.
And the system devoured him before he even knew what an exclusivity contract was.
Afterward came projects that tried to exploit that image of the tormented teenager. In 1995 he shot The Cure, and a year later he appeared in Sleepers under Barry Levinson's direction. Sharing the bill with Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt didn't seem to intimidate him at all.
But the turning point came in 1998 with Apt Pupil. Bryan Singer put him face to face with a giant like Ian McKellen in a dark story about the Nazi past and youthful obsession. Renfro proved he could carry a complex psychological drama without leaning on the mannerisms of the era.
That film was his professional peak and the start of his public fall. While critics praised his maturity on screen, the Knoxville police arrested him for possession of cocaine and marijuana. He was only fifteen when the stigma of addiction began to weigh more than his film credits.
Hollywood forgives sin but not delays on set.
From the early 2000s on, his presence in major productions vanished. He tried to stay afloat with independent films and supporting roles in movies like Ghost World in 2001. But the headlines no longer focused on his talent, only on his stays at rehab centers.
In 2005, he was arrested during an undercover raid in the Skid Row neighborhood while trying to buy heroin. The photo of his police booking spread around the world and showed a gaunt young man who bore little resemblance to the boy from The Client. Producers stopped calling because of the high cost of insurance required to hire him.
He never regained the work pace of his childhood.
He spent his final years in minor projects and a constant struggle with his own demons. In 2008, he shot his last scenes for the film The Informers alongside Mickey Rourke and Winona Ryder. Nobody on that set knew those would be his last recorded images on 35 millimeter film.
He died on January 15, 2008 in his Los Angeles apartment from an accidental heroin overdose. He was 25 years old and left behind a secret son in Japan, whose existence became known only after his will was read. The county coroner closed the case weeks after his death.
