The Weight of the Family Name and the First Contract

Cara Delevingne wasn't seeking approval from the lens of a camera. In 2012, she appeared for a few seconds in the adaptation of Anna Karenina, and the industry understood that London was too small for her. That brief scene alongside Keira Knightley served as the first sign of an ambition that went beyond exclusive runway contracts.

The Delevingne name already carried weight in British social circles long before her move to the screen. But she preferred the mud of film sets to the comfort of parties in Belgravia. Her family had ties to royalty and the publishing world, an environment that often judges with prejudice anyone who tries to switch careers.

Her first major breakthrough came in 2015 with Paper Towns. The film grossed more than 85 million dollars on a minimal budget. It was the exact moment Hollywood stopped seeing her as a model who acted and started treating her as a profitable investment.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2016, she accepted the role of Enchantress in Suicide Squad. Critics were harsh on the film's final cut, but the project achieved massive box office numbers worldwide. Cara had to deal with makeup sessions lasting several hours and a physical process that moved her decisively away from the polished look of her years at Burberry.

The Risk of Big Budgets

A year later, she starred in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets under the direction of Luc Besson. The project cost nearly 200 million dollars and failed to meet financial expectations in the U.S. market. That commercial stumble forced the actress to rethink her strategy for choosing scripts in the years that followed.

Still, independent film was always her favorite refuge when blockbusters fell short. In 2018, she took part in Her Smell alongside Elisabeth Moss. She played a musician in a raw story that had nothing to do with the spaceships or superheroes of her earlier work.

Because the change of decade brought a bigger presence on streaming platforms and a step back from the tabloid spotlight. In 2019, she led the cast of Carnival Row alongside Orlando Bloom. The dark fantasy series allowed her to explore a denser dramatic range over two full seasons, during which she also took on producing duties.

The stage claimed its place.

In 2022, she joined the cast for the second season of Only Murders in the Building. Her chemistry with Selena Gomez was one of the most talked-about highlights of the show. It proved she could fit into fast-paced comedies without losing her British identity or the restraint that the mystery genre demands.

Technical Maturity and the Return to London

In 2023, she joined the cast of American Horror Story: Delicate, sharing the screen with Emma Roberts. Ryan Murphy's production used her presence to reinforce a psychological horror plot tied to fame and motherhood. It was a restrained, technical job that confirmed her ability to hold long takes without relying on big tricks.

During the first half of 2024, she made her West End debut in London in the musical Cabaret. She played Sally Bowles at the Playhouse Theatre, earning reviews that praised her physical commitment on stage. The contract for this production required eight performances a week in a setting of extreme vocal and physical demands.

Delevingne closed that stage chapter to focus on pre-production of The Patient. The film is directed by Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor and centers on a psychological suspense drama. Filming was scheduled to begin on a tight budget with a largely female crew.

This film is being produced by her own film company. The shooting schedule for the coming months includes locations in Europe, and a post-production timeline that will run through the end of the year. The estimated budget for the art department does not exceed five million euros.
