Christian Navarro was born in the Bronx in 1991. His parents are Puerto Rican, and that identity shaped how he understood the industry from childhood. He started out in commercials and tiny parts because money was tight at home, and acting seemed a logical outlet for a boy with too much energy.
In 2005 he landed his first credit in a low-budget horror film titled Day of the Dead 2: Contagium. It wasn't the dream start. He spent years jumping from one series to another, playing roles that barely had names in the credits. But in 2014 he landed a recurring role on Power, and things began to move in a different direction.
Nobody handed him an actor's license.
Before shooting on big sets, he worked on the series Vinyl in 2016. It was an HBO production where Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger put up the money. Navarro played Jorge, and although his role was brief, it helped him understand how the work pace operated in the major leagues of American television.
In 2017, Navarro's life changed after a casting process that lasted weeks. Netflix was looking for the leads of 13 Reasons Why, and he ended up landing the role of Tony Padilla. His character was the protagonist's confidant and the one in charge of handling the cassette tapes that drove the entire plot of the series.
The red Mustang he drove on the show became an inseparable part of his public image.
And the gamble paid off.
But massive success brought a pressure the actor hadn't expected. The series tackled extremely raw themes such as teen suicide and school bullying. Navarro had to face interviews and public forums to defend the production's storytelling while shooting four seasons that ended in 2020. During that time he learned to drive for the series, because before filming began he didn't have a driver's license.
Navarro didn't want to stay stuck in Netflix's high school drama forever. In 2018 he appeared in Can You Ever Forgive Me? alongside Melissa McCarthy. It was a supporting role in a film that earned unanimous critical praise and several Academy Award nominations. He played Kurt, and his performance proved he could hold his own against top-tier actors.
In 2022 he decided to try his luck in genre films with Prey for the Devil. It was an exorcism movie in which he played Father Dante. The shoot took place in Bulgaria and posed a significant physical challenge due to the tense scenes and the dark atmosphere the story required. The actor went from teen dramas to clerical robes in less than two years.
The horror film's worldwide box office exceeded 44 million dollars.
In 2024 he joined the cast of The Bad Guardian for the Lifetime network. It's a true-story drama in which he shares the screen with Melissa Joan Hart, and it examines the legal guardianship system in the United States. The shoot was completed on a very tight production schedule on location in Los Angeles.
The production of this latest feature film had a crew of sixty people.
