Christopher Masterson landed the role of Francis in Malcolm in the Middle without realizing that he would spend much of the shoot thousands of miles away from the rest of the main cast. His character lived at a military school while his younger brothers put up with Lois at home. That physical distance shaped the actor's work routine over seven consecutive seasons.
He became the go-to face of teen rebellion on television.
Before landing the Fox comedy, he had already made a mark in big-budget studio films. He appeared in My Best Friend's Wedding in 1997, playing the younger brother of Dermot Mulroney. But general audiences knew him almost exclusively for his cadet uniform and the nighttime escapades of a troubled teenager.
The bet on television paid off for years.
Being Danny Masterson's brother opened some doors early on, but it also led to constant comparisons within the Los Angeles industry. Christopher tried to set himself apart with darker roles or productions far from the laugh track. He was looking for a space of his own that did not depend on the momentum of his breakout series.
In 2000, he starred in the direct-to-video sequel to Dragonheart. It was a risky move that failed to make the impact needed to put him in the front ranks of major Hollywood studios. He tried his luck again in 2008 with The Art of Travel, playing a man who abandons his wedding to backpack through Central America.
Not everything went as planned at the box office.
That's the reality of the industry: strongly defined characters often consume the actors who play them. Masterson shot Intellectual Property in 2006, just as the series that made him famous was wrapping up. The film was meant to introduce him as a dramatic actor, but its distribution was limited and it generated almost no media buzz.
Acting stopped being his top priority after his TV years ended. Christopher Masterson began devoting more time to his work as a disc jockey under the name DJ Chris Kennedy. As a result, his on-screen appearances became sporadic and highly selective from the late 2000s onward.
Music offered him a creative control that casting directors systematically denied him. In 2010, he shared the screen with his brother in an episode of White Collar (Ladrón de guante blanco), but it was a one-off collaboration. He preferred to focus on DJing at clubs and private events, where his name carried more weight than his past as Francis.
He married actress Yolanda Pecoraro in 2019, and two years later they had their first daughter. His business interests shifted toward investing and managing ventures outside pure entertainment (including owning several restaurants). The young star's lifestyle gave way to a much more low-key routine.
In 2019, he took part in the thriller Beneath the Leaves alongside Doug Jones. The film was shot in California on a total production budget of under five million dollars.
