The giant who didn't need to talk

Daniel Cudmore stands nearly six feet seven, and that genetic gift helped him make a grand entrance into Hollywood. In 2003, director Bryan Singer was looking for someone who could intimidate without saying a word for X2. He didn't need many screen tests.

And the gamble paid off.

Cudmore was born into a family where professional sports were the norm, not the exception. His brothers excelled at football and rugby, but Daniel preferred to use his physique for fiction. Before getting into film, he attended university on a football scholarship, which he eventually gave up to focus on acting.

On the set of the mutant sequel, he spent hours under layers of makeup and green screen to bring Colossus to life. It was a blunt, direct introduction to big budgets. His physical presence allowed him to fill the screen without needing long monologues.

But superhero movies are unpredictable.

Despite the character's importance in the comics, his appearance in X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 was more visual than narrative. The writers chose to focus on other storylines, and Cudmore accepted his role as a brute-force fighter with a professionalism that opened the door to other big-budget franchises.

Fangs, Armor and the End of the Mutants

In 2009, the actor traded metal for fangs when he joined the Twilight saga in New Moon. He played Felix, a member of the Volturi guard, and reprised the role in the next three films through 2012. It was a job that helped him connect with a young audience totally different from the Marvel comics crowd.

It wasn't all makeup and digital effects.

In 2012, he took on the challenge of playing a video game icon in the series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn. He donned the Master Chief's armor and had to learn to convey emotion through a sealed helmet. The production demanded total body control so the soldier's movements wouldn't look clumsy under the weight of the suit.

And then came the return to his roots. In 2014, he once again played Colossus in X-Men: Days of Future Past, under Singer's direction once more. It was the last time he played the Russian mutant before the character was digitally redesigned for the Deadpool films.

Cudmore turned down a role in the 2016 version because the studio wanted only his voice and movement capture, not his face. It was a career decision based on the actor's dignity in the face of technology.

Maturity Behind the Mask

After that breakup, the actor focused on television projects and genre films where his face mattered more than special effects. In 2018, he joined the series The Flash as Gridlock and showed he could handle the pace of DC's episodic productions.

In 2021, he returned to the superhero world with the series Superman & Lois. He played Sub-Zero and later a version of Bizarro, where physical work was once again key to his performance. This time, however, the script allowed him to explore darker nuances than in his early years in the industry.

He has been a constant presence in Canadian productions over the past decade. In 2022, he worked on the movie Corrective Measures, sharing scenes with Bruce Willis in one of the veteran actor's last projects before retiring. The film was shot mainly in Vancouver.

Filming for that production wrapped in just twenty-two days with a lean crew to keep post-production costs down.
