David Hornsby looks like a guy who would never get into trouble. He was born in Virginia in the late 1975 and grew up in Texas with that good-guy face Hollywood usually saves for insurance ads. But his career is anything but conventional.
In 2005, he joined the writing team of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Nobody imagined then that he would end up playing Rickety Cricket. The character started out as a respectable priest and ended up as a human wreck living on the streets of Philadelphia. Hornsby agreed to have his image destroyed season after season for the sake of the comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
The actor not only writes and acts in the series. He has also worked as executive producer for years. His ability to take harsh jokes in front of the camera contrasts with his rigor in the production offices. Because Hornsby is an architect of dark humor who knows exactly where the line of bad taste is.
But the success of the Irish pub was not enough for him. In 2020, he co-created Mythic Quest for Apple TV+ with Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day. He plays David Brittlesbee, a video game executive producer who desperately tries to keep order in an office full of egos. It's the role of his career outside the universe of physical degradation.
Nobody wanted that role at first.
In this production, Hornsby explores the power dynamics of the tech industry. He doesn't go for the cheap joke or the pratfall. He prefers humor that grows out of workplace frustration and budgets that spiral out of control. His work as producer on this series shows he has complete command of modern storytelling rhythm.
Hornsby understands that comedy is all about timing. That's why his scripts tend to be precise and avoid unnecessary filler. As a result, he has managed to stay in the industry for two decades without magazine covers or public scandals.
His work as a voice actor is another pillar of his bank account. In 2009, he voiced Fanboy in Nickelodeon's series Fanboy & Chum Chum. It was an exhausting job that taught him how large-scale animation works. Then came projects like Unsupervised in 2012, where he also served as creator.
In 2010, he married actress Emily Deschanel. They have two children and keep a private life that is well guarded despite both of their fame. But Hornsby still prefers people talk about his scripts rather than his vacations.
His presence in the industry is quiet but steady.
In 2023, he voiced several supporting characters on Velma. The pilot episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was originally shot with a home camera on a budget of just 200 dollars.
