Derek Richardson wasn't chasing critical respect when he arrived in Los Angeles.
In 2003, he took on the role of Harry Dunne in Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. It was a risky move, since it meant stepping into the shoes of Jeff Daniels in front of an audience that didn't want a prequel without the original actors.
But Richardson wasn't afraid of looking ridiculous.
The movie was panned from every direction. But the actor managed to put his face on marquees across the United States before turning thirty.
Before films, he appeared in shows like Strangers with Candy and Law & Order. They weren't major roles. They were small doses of hands-on training that helped him understand how a professional film set works.
In 2005, his career took a dark turn with Hostel. Eli Roth cast him as Josh, and the bet paid off in a massive way at the box office. The film cost less than five million dollars and ended up grossing 82 million dollars worldwide.
And the industry changed its mind about him.
He went from the guy making goofy faces to a face capable of carrying a close-up in a physical horror film. But Richardson never felt entirely at home in the scream genre.
Because in Hollywood, typecasting is a glass prison that's hard to escape once the public associates you with a single type of role.
In 2006, he moved to television with the series Men in Trees. He played Patrick Bachelor for two seasons, and there he found a work rhythm that let him explore romantic comedy without the pressure of a summer blockbuster.
The series was filmed in Vancouver to simulate the Alaskan landscapes. It was a period of professional stability before returning to large-scale productions in California.
So he tried his luck on the big screen again.
He appeared in films such as Replicas in 2008 and Prep & Landing in 2009. But his big break in sitcoms came a few years later, thanks to a controversial actor.
In 2012, he joined the cast of Anger Management. He played Nolan, a character with passive-aggressive anger issues, across 100 episodes that aired between 2012 and 2014.
Working with Charlie Sheen at that time was a logistical challenge for anyone. But Richardson kept his cool and worked as a strong supporting actor who didn't steal the spotlight but held together the most complex scenes.
Later came appearances in Lethal Weapon and A Million Little Things.
In 2022, he appeared in the miniseries The Offer, playing a young Robert Evans. The shoot for this production about the inner workings of The Godfather took place at Paramount studios in Los Angeles.
And the gamble paid off.
Richardson lives in California with his wife, actress Franka Potente, and their two daughters. In 2023, he stayed out of the spotlight to focus on independent development projects. His contract for the series The Offer included a base salary per episode shot on location in California.
