The breakout of 2014

In 2014, Diana Bang found herself at the center of a media storm that outdid any Hollywood script. Her performance in The Interview as the North Korean head of propaganda put her in front of cameras across half the planet for reasons having nothing to do with art. But she kept her cool.

She was born in Vancouver to Korean immigrant parents. Before filming with Seth Rogen, she was already working the alternative stages of her hometown. She studied psychology at the University of British Columbia, although her understanding of human behavior came in handier for writing jokes than for running a clinic.

And then chaos arrived.

The film was hit by real cyberattacks and terrorist threats that forced the cancellation of its wide theatrical release. Bang handled the pressure with a composure unusual for someone who had just arrived in the big leagues. Her ability to stand firm against the industry was her best calling card.

She wasn't chasing quick fame or the spotlight of red carpets. For her, humor was a tool for social survival in an industry where roles for actors of Asian descent were scarce. So she decided to create her own opportunities from the very start.

Writing and the Assaulted Fish Group

Before the big budgets came the stage, bare and raw. She was part of the comedy collective Assaulted Fish, where she wrote and performed alongside other artists from the diaspora. Those years on the Vancouver circuit gave her the quick thinking that improv demands.

Comedy was her shield.

But her range went beyond easy laughs or five-minute sketches. In 2015, she joined the series The Order and began exploring darker genres. That horror and fantasy production let her step away from the comedic stereotype Hollywood tends to assign to actresses with her look.

In 2017, she worked on Entanglement and proved she could carry dramas with complex psychological nuance. The Canadian market soon felt too small for her, and streaming platforms started knocking on her door with long-running projects. But Bang never abandoned her work as a screenwriter.

From Science Fiction to Post-Apocalyptic Drama

In 2021, she joined the cast of Resident Alien as Nurse Ellen Cho. On this Syfy series, she brought back her comedic flair, but through a far more acidic and dry lens. Filming took place in Ladysmith and Vancouver, which allowed her to work close to her family roots.

That same year, she took part in the television adaptation of Y: The Last Man for FX. The series imagined a world where all mammals with a Y chromosome died suddenly. Bang played Dr. Allison Ng, and her presence was essential in giving scientific weight to a plot loaded with politics and survival.

It was a risky bet that didn't lead to a follow-up.

In 2023, she appeared in the HBO series The Last of Us as a quarantine zone worker in the first episode. It was a brief role but charged with technical tension in one of the most expensive productions of the decade. Her precise movements were key to the atmosphere of the pilot.

By 2024, her career had settled into cable television with recurring appearances that prioritize script quality over screen time. In 2024, the production team of Resident Alien confirmed that the new episodes would be filmed entirely on location in British Columbia to optimize the region's tax incentives.
