Dianne Doan did not start in front of a movie camera but under the spotlights of BC Place Stadium during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics. That large-scale technical spectacle in Vancouver was her first real contact with entertainment on a big scale. She trained as a technical dancer, which gave her an understanding of physical discipline before she ever learned her first fictional script.
Dance discipline was her best school.
In 2013, she landed a small role in the series Once Upon a Time, but her entry into the Disney studio is what changed her international visibility. She played Lonnie in Descendants for 2015 and reprised the role in the 2017 sequel. These productions often become gilded cages for many young actors who never manage to break out of the youth circuit.
Doan instead chose to wade into the historical mud of Vikings in 2016. Her character was named Yidu, an enslaved woman who ends up captivating Ragnar Lothbrok. She appeared in seven episodes of the fourth season, and her exit from the series was as abrupt as the script by Michael Hirst demanded at that point.
The project that truly defines her professional maturity is Warrior. The series is based on the original writings of Bruce Lee and is set in the San Francisco Chinatown gang wars of the late 19th century. Doan plays Mai Ling, a woman who escapes a forced marriage in China to lead one of the most dangerous clans in the city.
Filming all three seasons between 2019 and 2023 required a level of martial choreography that few actors can sustain without constant stunt doubles. This is where her dance background proved decisive. She managed to perform 90 percent of her own fight scenes without any outside technical assistance.
Because the character of Mai Ling is not just a physical fighter. She represents political ambition in a world where women were treated as commodities. So her performance moved away from the usual martial arts stereotypes to focus on the coldness of command.
It hasn't been a straight path.
In 2024, she appeared in the mystery comedy Reunion directed by Chris Nelson. Sharing the cast with Lil Rel Howery and Billy Magnussen forced her to work on comedic timing, a register she had barely explored during her years of period dramas and pure action. The shift in tone was a deliberate choice to avoid being typecast in roles as an Asian period character.
During 2024, she also joined the cast of Better Man, the biopic about Robbie Williams directed by Michael Gracey. In this production, she plays Nicole Appleton in a story that blends reality with unconventional visual elements. The film had an estimated budget of $100 million.
Filming for Better Man took place mainly at Docklands Studios in Melbourne and used advanced motion-capture technology for the lead character.
