From the Forests of Manitoba to the National Theatre School

Before stepping onto a TV set, Donnelly Rhodes worked as a park warden in Canada. Acting wasn't part of his plans: he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, but acting crossed his path in the early 1960s. In 1963 he was part of the first graduating class of the National Theatre School of Canada. That group of students laid the foundations for an industry that was still in its infancy in the North.

His look was rough, but his gaze carried a strange calm. That helped him break into the United States quickly. In 1969 he landed a supporting role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He wasn't the lead, but sharing the screen with Paul Newman gave him the push he needed to land one TV series contract after another throughout the following decade.

Television became his natural habitat.

During those years, he appeared in quick-turnaround productions such as Mission: Impossible and How the West Was Won. These were roles with only a few lines, where Rhodes learned to be efficient. He wasn't after top billing but rather staying power in an industry that chewed through new faces every week.

Dutch's Success and the Danger Bay Phenomenon

In 1978, he landed the role that changed his image with American audiences. He played Dutch Leitner in the comedy Soap. The character was complex (an escaped convict who ends up joining a chaotic family), and Rhodes gave him a humanity that wasn't written into the original script. He appeared in more than 30 episodes of the series and proved he could handle comedic timing as confidently as pure drama.

His greatest impact in his homeland, however, came with Danger Bay in 1984. For six years, he brought Grant "Doc" Roberts to life. The series was exported to dozens of countries, and Rhodes became a familiar face to millions of children who watched television every afternoon. It was a production of 123 episodes shot entirely in Vancouver.

And the Canadian industry rewarded him handsomely.

He won a Gemini Award in 2002 for his role as a detective in Da Vinci's Inquest. It was a late recognition of a work ethic that never faltered. Rhodes wasn't one to wait for a call from a major studio. He preferred to be on set working on any project with a solid script and a professional crew behind it.

Dr. Cottle and Coming Full Circle

For the new millennium generation, his name will always be linked to Battlestar Galactica. In 2004 he accepted the role of Dr. Sherman Cottle. He was a chain-smoking, grumpy, deeply ethical doctor operating aboard a spaceship in the middle of a war of extermination. Rhodes didn't need big speeches to steal scenes. A look of contempt and a cigarette in his mouth were enough.

Cottle was the cynical heart of the fleet.

In 2016, he made one of his last notable appearances in the crossover between The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. He played Agent Smith in a storyline that connected several superhero productions. Despite his advanced age, he kept the commanding presence that had defined him since his early days in Winnipeg theaters. There were no big retirement announcements, because for him, acting was a craft.

Donnelly Rhodes died on January 8, 2018 at the Baillie House hospice in Maple Ridge. He was 80 years old and had been battling cancer, which he kept with complete discretion. His death was confirmed by his talent agency, Talentum Management, in a brief statement that avoided any unnecessary embellishment.
