Emilie de Ravin arrived in California at eighteen with a military-style training in classical ballet. She had spent much of her adolescence at the Australian Ballet School (an environment where discipline borders on physical punishment), but she decided that acting offered a freedom that the ballet stage denied her.
It was a purely instinctive decision.
Shortly after arriving, she landed a spot in the cast of Roswell. She played Tess Harding (an alien with questionable intentions), and the experience taught her how the American industry worked. The work pace on network television in the late nineties was exhausting. But she was already used to rehearsing ten hours a day in front of a mirror.
In 2004, her name made the final cast list for Lost. J.J. Abrams chose her to bring Claire Littleton to life (the pregnant young woman who survives the crash of Oceanic 815), and that role changed her finances forever. Filming moved to Hawaii, and Emilie spent six seasons there surrounded by jungle and scripts that changed every week.
During breaks from the series, she looked for projects that would take her away from the sweet-girl image. In 2005, she shot Brick under the direction of then-unknown Rian Johnson. It was a risky bet on low-budget film noir that ended up winning the Special Jury Prize at Sundance. There, she showed she could carry dense dialogue and dark atmospheres without missing a beat.
In 2010, she starred in the romantic drama Remember Me alongside Robert Pattinson. The film grossed more than $56 million at the international box office and put her on the radar of major Hollywood studios.
Television was his safe haven.
After the island, she joined the cast of Once Upon a Time in 2012. She played Belle (the heroine of Beauty and the Beast) and stayed on the show for a total of 117 episodes. The role required her to move to Vancouver and balance family life with the demands of a fantasy series filled with constant digital effects.
And she did it without complaining about the marathon filming days in the Canadian forests.
In 2022, she decided to return to her professional roots in Australia to shoot the miniseries True Colours. She played Detective Isabelle Beck in a storyline centered on the black market for Aboriginal art in the Australian Outback. The project marked a shift toward more stripped-down, direct police drama.
In 2024, she wrapped filming on Wreckage, where she shares the screen with Tyrese Gibson. The production was completed in an unusually short time for an action thriller. The film was scheduled for a digital release later that same year.
