Necar Zadegan

The weight of words on Broadway

Necar Zadegan speaks five languages, and that almost mathematical precision defines his work in front of the camera.

Born in Germany and raised in California, she studied Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara. That academic foundation helped her dissect scripts long before she stepped onto a major-budget professional set.

In 2010, she landed the role of Dalia Hassan in the eighth season of 24. It was a high-pressure environment where she had to hold her own dramatically opposite a Kiefer Sutherland at the peak of their career.

She did it without batting an eye.

That same year, she made her Broadway debut in Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. She shared the stage with Robin Williams in a production that became a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Zadegan played several characters with a coolness that captivated New York's most demanding critics.

Her theater training helped her avoid the flat, one-dimensional roles Hollywood often offers actors of Iranian descent. But she was looking for more than being the exotic face in a cop procedural.

Because her goal was always control of the narrative pace.

Breaking the stereotype on television

In 2014, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce arrived, the first scripted series on Bravo. She played Delia Banai, a divorce lawyer who hated the institution of marriage. The character broke the mold by presenting a woman of Persian descent whose storyline didn't revolve around her religion or her family.

Broadcast television came calling in 2018 to join the cast of NCIS: New Orleans. She played Special Agent Hannah Khoury until the series ended in 2021 after seven successful seasons on CBS.

It was a period of financial stability and global visibility. So she used that momentum to choose projects with a more evident political charge and less commercial appeal.

In 2022, she joined the cast of Mayor of Kingstown to bring Evelyn Foley to life. In this Paramount+ production, Zadegan navigates a world of prison corruption and moral dilemmas that calls for a more restrained and raw performance.

The gamble paid off.

During 2024, she took part in filming the third season of this series in Pittsburgh. The production decided to move the set from Ontario to take advantage of Pennsylvania's tax incentives, which offer a 25% tax credit to projects that spend at least 60% of their budget in the region.
