Emily VanCamp arrived in Montreal at age twelve to train at the École supérieure de ballet du Québec. She wanted to be a professional ballerina and lived with a foster family in a city where she didn't even understand the language. But seeing her sister Katie on a film set in 1999 drastically changed her plans. She gave up ballet pointe shoes and started making her way through auditions in Toronto.
In 2002, she landed the role of Amy Abbott on Everwood. That Greg Berlanti series served as her real acting school over four seasons. She worked alongside a young Chris Pratt when he wasn't yet a global star and she had barely finished her teens.
It was a period of fast-track learning.
Before turning twenty, she was already a familiar face on American television. Her look projected a mix of fragility and determination that fit perfectly into the family dramas of the era. After the end of her first major project, she joined Brothers & Sisters in 2007 to play Rebecca Harper.
The industry often typecasts young actresses as the perfect daughter or the charming girl next door. But in 2011, the script for Revenge landed on her desk and everything changed. Playing Emily Thorne required a coldness no one had ever seen in her. The series became a massive ratings hit for ABC and stayed on air for four years.
During that shoot she met Josh Bowman, and they married in 2018 in the Bahamas. Her personal life was forever tied to the production that put her on the global industry map. But the wear and tear of shooting twenty episodes a year began to take a physical and mental toll.
In 2014, she entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Her role as Sharon Carter seemed destined for a bigger expansion (she even shared a kiss with Chris Evans that sparked controversy among fans). She reprised the character in 2016 and took it on again in 2021 for the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+.
Broadcast TV in the United States can wear anyone down. In 2018, she agreed to star in The Resident as nurse Nic Nevin. It was a solid job that brought her financial stability again. But after four and a half seasons, she decided she needed to step back to focus on her recent motherhood.
And the script let her go.
In August 2021, her first daughter was born, and in March 2024, she announced the birth of her second little girl. Her departure from The Resident forced the writers to kill her character in a car accident during the third episode of season five. It was a technical decision to close her arc permanently with no chance of return.
In 2024, she shot the independent drama Prejudice in Canada under director James Bamford. Filming of this production on locations in Ontario lasted exactly twenty-two days.
