Elizabeth Olsen refused to be a child prodigy. While her older sisters made millions on television, she immersed herself in classical acting classes and experimental theater. In 2011, she arrived at the Sundance Film Festival with Martha Marcy May Marlene, and the industry realized the family name was the least important thing about her.
At seventeen, she decided that if she was going to act, she would do it all the way. She enrolled at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York and spent a semester at the Moscow Art Theatre. There, she learned that silence communicates more than a scream. But the general public didn't know her from Chekhov.
Her entry into independent film was a thermal shock.
In 2011, she shot Silent House and the aforementioned Sean Durkin film almost back to back. In the latter, she played a young woman who escapes a cult. Critics noticed her absent gaze and her ability to convey paranoia without resorting to melodrama. It was the moment she stopped being the twins' sister in the eyes of Los Angeles casting directors.
In 2014, she accepted the role of Wanda Maximoff. Her first appearance was a brief cameo during the credits of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was a risky bet, since superhero films often swallow the identities of their actors. But she negotiated her contracts carefully so she could keep making small projects between visual effects blockbusters.
And it worked.
During the filming of Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, she realized that working in front of a green screen required exhausting physical technique. Olsen had to invent a hand language inspired by dance to give meaning to her character's powers. In 2021, she starred in WandaVision, and the series earned twenty-three Emmy Award nominations.
Despite her heavy workload in the franchise, she never abandoned author-driven drama. In 2017, she starred in Wind River alongside Jeremy Renner. Shooting in the snow of Utah was a physical challenge that the actress used to distance herself from the polished image of Disney blockbusters.
After wrapping up her most intense stretch with Marvel in 2022 following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the actress sought roles that required less post-production and more dialogue. In 2023, she starred in Love & Death for the Max platform. She played Candy Montgomery, a housewife accused of murder in Texas during the 1980s. Preparing for the role included months of studying the local accent and the psychology of social repression.
In 2024, she premiered on Netflix in His Three Daughters alongside Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne. Filming lasted just eighteen days in a New York apartment. It was a return to her theater roots, where the weight of the story rests entirely on dialogue and the chemistry between the actresses. The budget was a fraction of what she had worked with before.
The industry no longer sees her as a franchise product.
In 2025, she shot The Assessment under the direction of Fleur Fortuné. It is a science fiction drama shot in Germany that explores the ethics of parenthood in a controlled future. For this project, the actress asked to take an active part in the script development process. Filming wrapped in October of that same year with a crew of fewer than sixty people.
